Convective Rainfall Rate improvements 2nd Convection Workshop Landshut, Germany, 8-10 October 2009 Cecilia Marcos Antonio Rodríguez
Hourly Accumulations Precipitation accumulated in the last hour (region center time): • Where: • Ai: hourly accumulation, in mm, corresponding to the time i. • T: time interval between scenes in hours (T= 0.25) • Ф: part of T that corresponds to the time that takes the satellite to reach the centre of the region. • Ii: Instantaneous rainfall rate for each scene in mm/h One hour accumulated CRR One hour accumulated Radar
New Calibration Radar (PPI) CRR rain rates are, most of the times, lower than radar ones New calibration: provides more weight to the higher rates CRR calibration 2008 CRR calibration 2009
Future work: lightning activity Radar (PPI) Objective: to obtain more information about convection through the electrical activity Problem: lightning activity does not always match the precipitation pattern Advantage: pattern improved, mainly in 2D calibration CRR without lightning information CRR with lightning information
