  1. Jame’E GunterSTEP Project Transportation vs. Living Necessities

  2. Who Is Involved?? Me, Brittany Hairston, Gabrielle Mack, Courtney Pittman, and Jordan Smith Transportation in Patrick County involves Ferrum College because students may decide to either move to Patrick County right out of College without a great source of income. Without the public transportation or reliable transportation it can become impossible for students to become employed.

  3. Quantitative Research Short Term Goals Surveys in Patrick County Surveys Through Facebook Long Term Goal Continue this research throughout next year

  4. Research • STEP (Patrick County) • Research (Media) • Survey (surveymonkey.com) • Blogger

  5. Defining Research • Association- A criterion for establishing a nomothetic causal relationship between two variables: variation in one variable is related to variation in another variable. Vital living necessities Vehicle Reliability Y/N Y/N • Causal Effect- The finding that change in one variable leads to change in another variable. No vehicle No employment No Income • Generalizability- Exists when a conclusion holds true for the population, group, setting, or event that we say it does, given the conditions that we specify; it is the extent to which a study can inform us about persons, places, or events that were not directly studied. Patrick County Population Individuals without public transportation Single parents • Individual Unit of Analysis- A unit of analysis in which individuals are the source of data and the focus of conclusions. Patrick County Survey Monkey

  6. Defining Research Continued………….. • Needs Assessment- A type of evaluation research that attempts to determine the needs of some population that might be met with a social program. Patrick County Needs Assessment Survey Random Selection

  7. Transportation Importance Martinsville versus Danville Martinsville, VA has lack of public transportation/Danville, VA great amount of public transportation “Community development patterns in the US have resulted in the necessity of vehicle ownership. Among every population segment, including the poor, minorities, and the elderly, the private car is by far the dominant travel mode” (Lichetenwalter, Koeske, & Sales, 2006),“Transportation is consistently identified as a major barrier to low-income single mothers’ employment” (Lichetenwalter, Koeske, & Sales, 2006) I experienced a lack of any advantages (through my family): Employment Child Care

  8. Vehicle Ownership Patrick County Survey Monkey Yes Yes = 1 = Yes No = No 2 = No

  9. STEP Survey Monkey Barriers of Vehicle Ownership

  10. Employment STEP Survey Monkey Yes Yes = No = No Family Responsibilities Discrimination: What employment counselors need to know by Alison N. Von Bergen, C.W. Von Bergen, and Doreen A. Ballare. “This article addresses the guidance and its importance for employment counselors” (Von Bergen, Von Bergen, & Ballare', 2008).

  11. Child Care Barrier

  12. Evaluation • Survey (Survey Monkey) • More people involved • Interview • Wanted to do one but didn’t want it to be so personal

  13. Conclusion Although this data proves that a large amount of people have reliable transportation, those that do not have these variables tend to fall behind. The circumstances for not having a vehicle only strengthens the argument that without transportation living necessities are almost impossible.Theworld relies heavily on transportation and without it you will fall greatly behind .
