  2. NCES Datasets • Universal • IPEDS Collected from All Institutions Eligible for Title IV funding • Tracks Data about: • Enrollments • Completions • Finances • Faculty and Staff • Institutionally Based

NCES Datasets • Longitudinal • Follows individuals over time regardless of enrollment and attendance patterns • Not confined to attendance at a single institution • Shows multiple attendance patterns • Shows transfer patterns • Shows degree completion or other outcome regardless of number of institutions attended • Shows interactions of education and work • Tracks changes in career and income

  4. Postsecondary Data Available • National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS) • Beginning Postsecondary Student Aid Study (BPS) • Baccalaureate and Beyond (B&B) • National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF)

  5. NPSAS Survey Universe • All levels of postsecondary education institutions • vocational through doctorate-granting • public, private non-profit, private for-profit • Both aided and non-aided students • Full- and part-time students • Undergraduate, graduate, and first-professional students

NPSAS Eligibility • To be eligible for NPSAS, an institution must offer: • programs for people who have completed secondary education • an academic, occupational, or vocational program • the program to people who are not employed by the institution • more than just correspondence courses • at least one program lasting 3 months or 300 clock hours or longer • Be located in the 50 states, DC , or Puerto Rico

NPSAS Student Eligibility • To be eligible for NPSAS, a student must have been either: • Attending a NPSAS eligible institution AND • enrolled between July 1 - June 30 of the NPSAS survey year • taking courses for credit toward a degree or formal award OR • in a degree or formal award program of at least 3 months or • in an academic, occupational, or vocational program of at least 3 months or 300 clock hours

NPSAS Research Questions • How do students and families pay for postsecondary education? • How have costs and financial aid packages changed over the years? • Why do some students receive more financial aid than other students from apparently similar backgrounds? • How much have students and families borrowed to pay for postsecondary education? • How do costs and financial aid influence students' choices of schools and majors? • Why do some students/families not apply for financial aid?

NPSAS Analytic Concerns • Read (carefully) the description of variables in the “description windows”--sometimes a variable may have a similar label but have a different meaning. • Price of attendance and Expected Family Contribution (EFC) are important variables to consider when comparing student financial aid awards • Check the standard error for a given estimate when making comparisons

  11. NPSAS Analytic Concerns Continued… • Be aware of the sampling differences across surveys • Read the “readme.txt” file that accompanies the CD • When your run an analysis and don’t believe the results, remember . . . • “Life is full of surprises!”

Differences between NPSAS survey and BPS • BPS • adjusted sample to include more institutions most likely to have first-time beginners • oversampled students in institutions likely to have first-time beginners • includes family background data prior to PSE entry • includes institutional climate/satisfaction items

BPS Research Questions • How is persistence related to transfer behavior of students between institutions? • How is persistence related to employment while enrolled, student financial assistance, and family formation? • At what rates are students attaining postsecondary certificates, associate’s degrees, and bachelor’s degrees? • How long does it take to attain a certificate or degree? • Are those who complete a postsecondary program able to obtain a job related to the field of study? How long does it take?

  18. BPS Analytic Concerns • Time-censors bachelor’s degree attainment • Detailed financial information not available after first year - only self-reported in general later • Persistence/progress self-reported • Selection of appropriate weight • Sample size for some sub-groups of students

Baccalaureate and Beyond (B&B) • Primary design features • First time longitudinal study of only bachelor’s degree graduates • Based on cross-sectional NPSAS (National Postsecondary Student Aid Study) • Compatible with previous RCG (Recent College Graduate) series • Will continue for about 10 years after bachelor’s degree completion • Begins where BPS (beginning postsecondary students longitudinal studies) starts to loose power

Does the required time differ by degree attained? Does it differ by field? • How long do bachelor's degree recipients take to complete the bachelor's degree? Does this vary by field of study, type of school, age of student, or time of first entry into a postsecondary program?

Do these persons persist in seeking to enter and do they succeed in entering later?
