Progressive Supranuclear Palsy or PSP affects the part of the brain which is responsible for controlling the movement, speech, reflexes, thinking mood and behavior. The symptoms can be different for person to person. The beginning stages of PSP include the inability to walk, falling spells, and stiffness. The most frequent first symptom of PSP is a loss of balance while walking, not able to aim your eyes properly. Additional signs and symptoms of progressive supranuclear palsy include: 1. Problems with speech and swallowing 2. Sensitivity to light 3. Loss of interest in pleasurable activities 4. Impulsive behavior, possibly including laughing or crying for no reason 5. Difficulties with memory, reasoning, problem-solving and decision-making 6. Depression and anxiety 7. A surprised or frightened facial expression, resulting from rigid facial muscles What causes Progressive Supranuclear Palsy? The exact cause of PSP is unknown. The symptoms of PSP are caused by a gradual deterioration of brain cells in a few specific areas in the brain and have abnormal amounts of a protein called tau, mainly in the region called the brain stem. One of these areas, the substantia nigra, is also affected in Parkinson's disease, and damage to this region of the brain accounts in part for the motor symptoms that PSP and Parkinson's have in common. Researchers found that having abnormal amounts of a protein called tau can deterioration of brain cells of people with progressive supranuclear palsy. Clumps of tau are also characteristic of other neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease. Rarely, progressive supranuclear palsy occurs within a family. But a genetic link isn't clear, and most people with progressive supranuclear palsy haven't inherited the disorder. It's Treatment: Since there's no cure for progressive supranuclear palsy, so treatment focuses on managing the signs and symptoms. But research is continuing into new treatments that aim to relieve symptoms and prevent the condition getting worse. Treatment currently focuses on relieving the symptoms while trying to make sure someone with PSP has the best possible quality of life.
