  6. Academic Standards Standard SOC.11.1 Diversity of People All students will describe,compare, and explain the locations and characteristics of places, cultures, and settlements. Standard Soc.11.3.EE..2 Location Identify people and places in other locations and explain their importance to the community.   7. Lesson 1 • The students will write to pen pals from Britton.

  8. Example Dear Penpal, Hi, I’m Alex and I’m in second grade. My techer is Mrs. Seidl. She maks me work hrd. I lik to rid forwhelers. Do you know what thatis? It is a mashen that gos 60-70 miles per hour. Do you like school? I like school and I like Math. Writ soon, Alex

  9. Lesson 2 • We will locate our pen pals on the internet and also on our map. We will talk about the communities that our pen pals live in and discuss the school location as well.

  11. Lesson 3 • The students will then use details in writing and ask questions about their surroundings.

  12. In Social Studies we will cover many Topics We will focus on reading skills that include: phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. We will use many maps, graphs and charts.

  15. Overview of Assessment The students should develop an understanding of the inter-relationship between environment and state, displaying knowledge of map reading skills on a U.S. map.

  16. Lesson Assessment • The students will successfully display knowledge of specific map skills (north, South, East, West, locate Michigan and its surroundings, oceans, lakes, mountains). • We will also participate in discussion with statements from our letter writing.
