Introduction SeislogCE was developed for seismological data acquisition on a PocketPC. PocketPCs are small standardized handheld PCs, also called PDA. The PocketPC hardware gave us the possibility of a low price, easy available, compact and low power data recorder. We already had a seismological data acquisition software called Seislog running on the QNX and Windows operating system. The PocketPC runs on the Windows CE (Compact Edition) operating system, which is very similar to Windows regarding writing software code. Hence a lot of the code from the Seislog software was reused. • SeislogCE features • Seismological data recorder with continuous, event (STA/LTA), and time based recording. • Plot signals from digitizer in realtime. • Network trigger. Possible to setup conditions for several channels to trigger within time window before event is recorded. • Event files are stored in SeisAn format. • USB cable or network for data transfer to desktop PC, where SeisAn can be used for data analysis. • Supports 6 different digitizers, but can only record from one digitizer at the time. Setup the digitizer. • SeislogCE history • SeislogCE was written in spring 2001. It is mainly a rewriting of Seislog for Windows v0.9.96 • Web server for collecting data over network, and time based recording added 2002. • 2003/2004: Support for digitizer SeisAD18 and SADC16/18/20. • 2004: Support for 6ch Earth Data PS2400. The SeislogCE software, including source code, is freely available on our web site: www.geo.uib.no/Seismologi/software/seislog/seislogCE • PocketPC • Price €200-600 depending on features available. • Common PocketPC: HP (Compaq) iPAQ, Dell Axim, Toshiba E-series, Fujitsu-Siemens Look. • Touch screen size of 240x320 pixels, instead of a keyboard, a pen is used on the touch screen. • The operating system and some basic programs are stored in ROM. • No hard disk, and hence no moving parts. Instead there are battery backup RAM (typical 64MB), and support for non-volatile memory cards. • Input/output: USB, IrDA (infrared serial port), and network through insert card. One serial port usually available. No parallel port. • Wireless network (WLAN) and Bluetooth embedded in high end devices, else optional through insert card. • Memory card, GPS, or more ports through Compact Flash or SD insert card. • Power consumption is low. SeislogCE ran 10 hours on an iPAQ h3950 with a 1.5Ah-5V battery (< 1 Watt). • Low cost compared to other embedded or mobile equipment. • Easy available. Sold in major electronic stores. • Connectors are small and fragile. Experience SeislogCE has mainly been used for background noise data collection for site response analysis. In the spring of 2004 it was decided to use PocketPC and SeislogCE for a small local network around Lhasa, Tibet, where the special requirement is operation above 5000 m altitude. In the summer of 2003 we experienced unstable operation using desktop and laptop PC in high altitude. After passing our vacuum chamber test, simulating altitude of up to 6000 m, 4 stations were installed in Tibet June 2004. In August the stations were inspected, all stations were running. Some bugs in SeislogCE were discovered and fixed, one issue is still unresolved. SeislogCE stops writing event files to the SD memory card after between 500 and 2000 files, so the storage capacity are only 30% of expected capacity. • Windows CE • Windows CE version 3.0 and the PocketPC hardware platform released year 2000. • The PocketPC built of Windows CE, are also called PocketPC 2000/2002 and Windows Mobile 2003. • Modular real time operating system. Smallest footprint around 1.5MB. • Support many CPUs: Mips, Arm & XScale, Power Pc, Intel x86. Typical clock frequency is 200 – 400 MHz. • Extensive network support Bluetooth, WLAN, VoIP, VPN. Servers: ftp, telnet and web. • Programming tool free. eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0 – 2002 edition. (Basic or C++). Very similar to programming in Windows. Vacuum chamber testing inside a sealed glass sphere. Local helpers in Jamag, a village 80 km east of Lhasa. Sensor location in Jamag. The site with the lowest noise of the 4 new seismological stations. SeislogCE installation in Jamag with Mariotti digitizer. Magnitude 5.5 earthquake recorded with SeislogCE at Jamag. Bandpass filter 0.001-0.2 Hz. Max. amplitude only 22 counts because 4.5Hz geophones are used. Encapsulated recorder at Nihmo station, a town 200 km south of Lhasa.
