  2. The Toolbox An electronic newsletter published six times per year. Its primary purpose is to provide practical strategies for improving teaching and learning. The audience includes full-time and adjunct faculty; academic advisors; and administrators focused on faculty development, teaching and learning, academic success, and the first college year. https://sc.edu/fye/toolbox

The Toolbox – Suggested Topics • Faculty-student relationships • Principles and practices of effective course design • Active-learning strategies for face-to-face venues • Applications of digital technology to face-to-face and online venues • Alternative strategies to assess student learning • Strategies and techniques for meeting the learning needs of diverse student populations

  4. The Toolbox - Guidelines • Highlights strategies easily transferred to practice • Adopts informal and conversational tone • Includes no more than 3-5 references • Uses active voice, third person • Is evidenced-based • Roughly 1,500 words

What Makes a Good Article? • Strategies for tackling issues/problems in the classroom, with an emphasis on helping faculty think through the process and improving student success • References to professional literature concerning the issue/problem. • Examples of practices that can transfer to a range of course types • Applications of technology to learning in and outside the classroom, and • An eye toward the future of teaching and learning (i.e., will this strategy still be applicable in five years?)

E-Source Suggested Topics • Strategies for addressing a variety of student transitions at different types of institutions • Strategies for assessing student learning or experiences, programs, or courses • Innovative teaching strategies • Descriptions of assessed institutional initiatives • Alternative funding sources • Programs addressing the needs of special student populations • Short descriptions for new and relevant print and online resources

What Makes a Good Article • Focused on practice • Parsimonious use of external literature (3-5 references; current and relevant) • Description of initiative, assessment efforts, and assessment results are clear and well-organized • Offers insights related to bringing initiatives to scale, implementing in other contexts, etc. • Word Limit: 1300-1500 words • No abstract necessary

  11. Writing About Practice: Key ?s • What is the problem or issue? • How does it impact student success? • How did you address it? Describe the strategy or strategies used to address the problem. • How did it work? Report assessment results. • What are the implications for the future, for other populations, or campus contexts? • How can readers benefit from your strategy?

Editorial Review Board • Serve a three-year term and are identified in the newsletter masthead and on the website • Hold a master’s degree or higher • Have a minimum of two years’ experience in one or more of the following areas within a higher education setting: instruction, first-year programs, transfer initiatives, sophomore initiatives, academic support initiatives, retention initiatives, assessment • Are affiliated with an accredited college or university • Have strong writing and editorial skills • New terms begin in July • Application deadline is April 15, 2019.

  14. Journal of The First-Year Experience & Students in Transition A semiannual refereed journal disseminating empirical research findings on student transition issues

Suggested Topics • Explorations into the academic, personal, and social experiences (including outcomes related to success, learning, and development) of students at a range of transition points • the first college year • the transfer transition • the sophomore year • the senior year and transition out of college • the transition to graduate work

Suggested Topics • Transition issues unique to specific populations (e.g., nontraditional, traditional, historically underrepresented students, transfer students, commuters, part-time students, first-generation students) • Explorations of faculty development, curriculum, and pedagogical innovations connected to any of the transitions identified above

Characteristics of Strong Journal Articles Overall Evaluation • New/important findings related to the study of college student transitions • Compelling rationale for the study • Research as opposed to assessment • Theory and/or concept based • Clearly written for a journal audience General Organization • Accurate, descriptive title • Well-crafted abstract • Standard components of a social science research article

Characteristics of Strong Journal Articles Methodology • Clearly stated hypotheses/research questions • Adequate descriptions of sample/sampling method • Clear descriptions of measures/treatment procedures • Appropriate research design • Appropriate statistical test or qualitative analysis used • Clear presentation of findings • Discussion/recommendations section congruent with results • Results situated in context of previous research/literature
