  1. Setting the Tone You can conclude that: • Many customs continue in slightly changed form. • The custom of touching glasses was once part of a religious ceremony. • Most people were friendly in ancient times. • Today poisons are used in food, not in wine.

  2. HOMEWORK • Take out your homework: • Read a newspaper article. • Tell who, what, when, where, and why from the article. • Find two fact and two opinion statements. • Find a cause and effect relationship. • Volunteers may share their information.

  3. Purpose • What are you learning? • Using test taking strategies • Why are you learning this? • To comprehend reading and to get comfortable with testing strategies

  4. Grammar Read this paragraph. It has 10 mistakes. Can you find them? (1) I saw a TV show about one womans trip to East africa. (2) On the first day, she saw lions One mother lion had two small cubs. (3) Next, the woman seen elephants. (4) They flapping their ears. (5) “Elephants flap their ears to keep cool, the woman explained. (6) Last, the woman saw Zebras. (7) Zebras look like striped horses but they cant be tamed like horses.

Crafting the Lesson • Read each question carefully so that you answer the question that is being asked. • Check to make sure you have answered ALL parts of the question. • Include details and examples from the passage. • Never answer in just a few words or a single sentence unless the question tells you that you should. • Stay on target and don’t include ideas and information that have nothing to do with the passage you have just read or the question you have been asked. • Raise your hand if you have a question. • Hold up your board only when you are told to do so.

  6. PACT REVIEW • Play “Jeopardy” • You will be partnered with another student. • The teacher will toss a coin to see which partner starts the game. Rotate clockwise to the next group. • If the student gets the question wrong, it goes to the next student. • The pair with the most money wins a prize.

Homework • Read a newspaper article. • Find two of the figurative language devices in the article. i.e. onomatopoeia,alliteration, metaphor, simile, personification, etc. • What conclusion can you draw about the article? • Compare and contrast two people, places, things, or ideas in the article.
