  3. Crafting the Lesson • Read the two articles. One is about Oprah Winfrey and the other is about Donald Trump. • Compare and contrast the two celebrities.

  4. Oprah Winfrey was born January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She is an African American female who was born to a poor Baptist family. When Oprah was young, she went to live with her father in Nashville, Tennessee. She valued education and is a graduate of Tennessee State University, a historically Black institution. She is the president of Harpo Productions (Oprah spelled backwards) and started The Angel Network, an organization that collects millions of dollars a year for charities. She publishes her own magazines, O, The Oprah Magazine and O at Home, and co-founded the women's cable television network Oxygen. She recently made a deal to extend her show until the 2010 – 2011 season, by which time it will have been on the air twenty-five years. Oprah Gail Winfrey is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the United States. Her net worth is $1 billion. Donald Trump was born in Queens, New York on June 14, 1946, the day the nation united to celebrate its flag, Flag Day. He is a Caucasian male, who grew up assisting his father in his business development. Trump had a very comfortable childhood and was sent to a military academy where he learned discipline and completed his middle education. He studied finance at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and is known as the all American real estate developer. He runs two companies which employ 22,000 people together. Donald Trump is worth over several billion dollars, but in spite of Donald's estimate of two billion, Forbes magazine only rates his value at $450 million.

  5. Composing Meaning • You will read “Making the Most of It” with a partner. After reading, discuss the similarities and differences between Oprah’s life as a child to an adult. • You will independently answer the questions at the end of the reading.
