  1. Introduction to Engineering Uchechukwu Ofoegbu Temple University

  2. Puzzle Isaac and Albert were excitedly describing the result of the Third Annual International Science Fair Extravaganza in Sweden. There were three contestants, Louis, Rene, and Johannes. Isaac reported that Louis won the fair, while Rene came in second. Albert, on the other hand, reported that Johannes won the fair, while Louis came in second. In fact, neither Isaac nor Albert had given a correct report of the results of the science fair. Each of them had given one correct statement and one false statement. What was the actual placing of the three contestants?

  3. Joke for the Day Arguing with an Engineer Arguing with an engineer is a lot like wrestling in the mud with a pig. After a few hours, you realize that he likes it.

  4. Definition of Engineering According to ABET, Engineering is: “The profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the material forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.

  5. List some things you would expect scientists to do List some things you would expect engineers to do So, what do you think? Engineering and Science?

  9. Engineering and Science “Both the engineer and scientist are thoroughly educated in the mathematical and natural sciences, but the scientist primarily uses this knowledge to acquire new knowledge, whereas the engineer applies this knowledge to design and develop usable devices, structures and processes. In order words. The scientist seeks to know, the engineer aims to do”. -Eddie, Jenison, Mashaw and Northup, Engineering Fundamentals and Problem Solving.

  10. Engineering and Art • Art and Engineering Drawings! List some similarities between artists and engineer • Similarities • Starts with a blank page • Visualization • Ideas transmitted from mind to paper • Differences • Usually a solution to a ‘problem’ • More logical • Design is actually created

  11. Why Engineering Graphics? An inevitable aspect of engineering design is _________________________ To draw is to _____________ • Engineering graphics is necessary for • Observation and analysis and of a conceived design • Communication between teams • Communication with clients

  12. Engineering Design Identify the problem Create and analyze models of conceived solution Visualize and document possible solution Implement and document the design Select the best design parameters

  13. Fundamental Tenets of Engineering Design Predictability: The extent to which future performances or failures of a design may be predicted based on knowledge of design parameters and variables Controllability: Variability in achieving cost and performance objectives

  14. Precision and Accuracy Which of these is important in engineering?

  15. Formulas in Engineering • Define formulas in your own words • Expressions that indicate the physical relationship between two variables/constants • What are some of the functions of formulas • Provide ideas for designs • Motivate insightful thinking • Indicate design limitations

  16. Limitations of Formulas • They do not give any exact solutions • They do not define a particular “best” way • They cannot reflect an actual design • The cannot ensure absolute safety • They cannot ensure elegance

  17. Engineering Activity • Think of a problem that needs to be solved physically • Visualize design solutions • Communicate your designs (include sketches) • Select optimum design

  18. Joke for the Day Engineers and Lawyers There was once an engineer who found a magic lamp. When he rubbed it, a genie jumped out and said to him, "You have three wishes. But there is a catch - this wish system of mine was designed by a lawyer, so whatever you wish for every lawyer in the world will get double of!" The engineer replied, "That's no problem, I can live with that." He then said, "For my first wish, I wish I had a Ferarri." "OK", said the genie, and a Ferarri appeared in front of the engineer. "But remember, every lawyer in the world now has 2 Ferarris," the genie told the engineer. The engineer remained unperturbed and said, "For my second wish, I wish for a million bucks." So a million bucks appeared in front of the engineer and the genie said, "remember, every lawyer in the world now has 2 million bucks." The engineer was non-committal and then said, "I always wished I could donate a kidney!"
