Building Hope Building Hope … Building hopethrough the following products and programs is only the beginning of what can be done to strengthen the lives of children, families, communities, and a country, but it takes someone to make the first step. Ray of Hope looks at what programs have not worked, and strives to take that first step by creating a program that will work. Ray of Hopeis a pilot program based on building a business that will continue to feed it from funds gathered through products and programs, rather than solely depending on the kindness and generosity of others. To begin, the children are the focus of this project; therefore, the children should be a part of it. So, it was decided that all children have a story to tell, no matter how rich or how poor, and a book, From the Pearl of Africa, “Through a Child’s Eyes”, was produced and is now available for purchase through the Foundation. The book contains the stories written and the illustrations drawn by the orphaned children of Fort Portal, Uganda, and is the catalyst for the program to gain name recognition and raise funds needed in order to build the much needed Children’s Home in Fort Portal. The following paragraphs describe and explain other programs in the building stage that will create resources, such as products that can be sold in stores and projects dedicated to schools and churches, to produce the funds to support not only the children, but also to aid others in the community by building a school and medical center. From the Pearl of Africa, “Through a Child’s Eyes”, published by Hewell Publishing, Carrollton, Texas,is a colorful 170 page paperback coffee table book containing the stories and illustrations by sixty orphaned children in Uganda. It offers the reader an opportunity to see just a glimpse of these children’s lives in their words and through their eyes. Each story also contains a photograph of the child. From the Pearl of Africa: “Through a Child’s Eyes” Art Exhibition: An art exhibition is being planned and organized to put on public display many of the large and colorful illustrations created by the children. The artwork will be matted and taken to universities and art galleries in major cities across the country from Dallas to New York, giving people the opportunity to see the hope in these children’s eyes from their hard lives that appear on paper. Death, disease, pain, and loneliness fill their lives every day, but yet the smiles that shine bright on their faces from hope and faith that someone will one day help is heartbreaking, and yet awe inspiring. The timetable for launching this project is February 2011 to commemorate African-American History Month. One piece of art will be auctioned at the end of the tour in each city where the exhibition is held, and ending in New York with an auction for all the pieces of art that are left in the exhibit. Pennies for Hope: This program is being developed for schools throughout the United States and elsewhere, to teach children, who are truly blessed, about the importance of helping others less fortunate. The package will include a video of the children in Uganda speaking about their lives, as well as pamphlets, learning tools and crafts, and a large jug for children to bring their pennies and loose change to collect over a dedicated time period. Building Hope Products for Progress and Hope: The program will give individuals, as well as groups such as churches, businesses, and corporations an opportunity to participate in building a better community for those less fortunate in Africa. The package will contain information about Ray of Hope and the products that are for sale, such as calendars, canvas bags, posters, note cards, bracelets and of course, the books. The package will also contain forms to collect orders. Product Placement Program: Once the name and logo for Ray of Hope is recognizable we will place our products into stores such as Hallmark, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. to help create the flow of funds needed to run Ray of Hope. Product tags will make them recognizable and let the consumer know that with the purchase of each product the proceeds go to help children in Uganda. With 95 percent of all proceeds collected going to the Ray of Hope project and the remaining 5 percent for administrative costs, so much can be done to improve children’s lives in not only Africa, but also in other parts of the world. Donate a Dollar Campaign: This campaign is designed to create awareness throughout the country that even one dollar can make a difference. No contribution is too small, not even one dollar because 350,000 people donating one dollar each is still $350,000, and that’s enough to break ground for the Ray of Hope Children’s Home.   3. One Heart Building Hope . . . .One Heart . . . Partnering with individuals, corporations, and organizations is vital in producing the much needed aid and funds that are essential in building a better future for children like those in Fort Portal, Uganda. It is through limitless generosity and gracious hearts that feeds the needed financial support into Ray of Hope. You can help through the following ways: Individual Sponsorships: For less than a dollar a day, individuals can sponsor a child’s education, and for a little more, they can help to subsidize food and shelter for an orphan staying with a guardian. Partnerships with Corporations: We have currently partnered with Alpha Graphics, a printing company in Carrollton, Texas, who has graciously donated their time and some of the printing costs, to help us as we begin our journey on a road that will be no doubt long and hard. We need more companies, however, to donate or sponsor Ray of Hope in order to build the proposed structures and provide supplies such as food, wood, seeds, and equipment. Corporations can help in various ways such as through services, monetary or product donations, or by assisting with fund-raising campaign programs through their companies. Assistance in Building Businesses: Investing in the community by focusing on teaching the guardians of the children how to build businesses, and by obtaining the funds to open their ventures is also another way that Ray of Hope in Africa can help the children. A healthy community with thriving businesses means healthy families. Teaching them how to be productive in the end creates a lifestyle that the next generation can learn and emulate. All of these programs are only the beginning of what can be done to strengthen the lives of children, families, communities, and a country, but it takes someone to boldly initiate that first step. One Child Building Hope . . .One Heart, One Child… Ray of Hope Children’s Home One in twelve children in Uganda is orphaned, and Ray and Mary Christopher saw these children first hand through the mission work of their church. In Fort Portal, Uganda, too many children were sleeping in the open with no shelter, struggling to find food, hungry for education, and no one to care for them. It was then that they decided to create, Humanitarian Hands Foundation (HHF), a non-profit organization, allowing them to do more for not only the children in Fort Portal, but in other areas of Africa as well. It is through HHF, that the program, Ray of Hope in Africa, was created. Asingura Nicholas 4 yrs old The Ray of Hope Children’s Home in Fort Portal is the first major project that HHF is building. It will offer two dormitories, one for girls and the other for boys, that will house a total of 150 children, four guest cottages, an administrative building with a small clinic, and a dining hall with a kitchen and study area. One Heart, One Child, One Village at a Time. “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, but teach the man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”--Old Proverb EDUCATION: Providing education for needy children is essential to Ray of Hope because the knowledge through education can never be taken from them. This project is designed to help educate, not only through primary grades, but also through college. Every one of these children have hopes and dreams of aspiring to be a great doctor, nurse, engineer, lawyer, and even a mechanic. So, if we help them to acquire that education, asking only for them to give a few years of service to Ray of Hope, the school will always have teachers, the community will always have doctors and engineers, and lawyers who grow up to be political advocates to better their communities. These students who come back to Ray of Hope also gain experience in order to go out into the world, wherever they want to practice, work, and live. HEALTH: Building a medical center, filled with equipment, a great medical team, and plenty of medicine needed to provide essential services to the village is vital for the health and well-being of the children in the area. Too many times children die each day because of the inability to receive treatment and medicines for typhoid, malaria, and AIDS. An article in The New York Times, May 10, 2010, stated that “Uganda is the first country where major clinics routinely turn people away, but it won’t be the last.” Reversing the problem of AIDS through education begins by changing the mindset and altering the actions of a new generation. At a Time Ray of Hope in Africa Summary for a Pilot Program Ray of Hope in Africa is a program created to aid orphans in Fort Portal, Uganda, by housing countless children who are alone and hungry with no one to care for them. The program is part of Humanitarian Hands Foundation established in 2006 by Ray and Mary Christopher after they spent many years in different parts of Africa working with their church missions. They found a lot that was needed, and much of it the church could not do because funds and resources were unavailable, so they decided to do more—they created Humanitarian Hands Foundation and filed for a 501(c)(3) status. The foundation decided to build the children’s home in Fort Portal, along with putting together other projects beneficial to Ateiku, Ghana as well. However, after looking at the project and what would be needed, a thought occurred from an old saying, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day, but teach the man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” The problem with this is that too many times organizations such as human rights groups and missionaries go in with good intentions and teach the man, but then once they give the man the knowledge, they turn around and pickup the pole and go home, leaving the man with the knowledge, but no way to use it. That’s when creating something different came to mind, thereby, resulting in, “Ray of Hope,” a pilot program—a program that teaches the man to fish, leaves the pole and other resources, so he can build a business from it and ultimately improve his lifestyle and his community.   7. Mission Building Hope…One Heart, One Child, One Village at a Time. • The mission of Ray of Hope is “Building Hope . . . One Heart, One Child, One Village at a Time.” By providing housing, medical assistance, and education for the children in the community, we can offer the necessary support and family atmosphere they need in order to live successful, productive lives. • The goal of Ray of Hope is to not only provide healthy housing for children who have suffered the loss of their parents, but to also build a school, medical center, and cafeteria with nutritional food and clean water. The funds that continue to fuel the school will, not only provide the children with their primary education, but also offer them a chance for higher education and college to those who wish to be doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. • Our college service program allows students the opportunity to attend college, but with the understanding that upon graduation, they have the payment options of donating monetarily or through service to Ray of Hope. The option to return services for college offers several advantages to our students, Ray of Hope, and to the people in the area. • First, graduating students receive several years of experience that will help them find good paying positions when they finish school. Secondly, students who return to work for Ray of Hope provide not only, the children’s home, medical center, and school with care-takers, nurses, doctors, teachers, engineers, and other professionals, but they also help to create a healthy community, physically and financially. • Why do we do it? • 1 in 12 children are orphaned in Uganda. • According to the New York Times, although two million people with AIDS die each year, another three million adults and children will be infected. (Monday, May 10, 2010) • According to a 2006 UNICEF Report, the total number of orphans in 2005 were 2,300,000 and the projected amount for this year is 2,500,000. One million of those was as a result of AIDS.
