  4. Unitary • Government holds all the power • Local gov/state have some power • Some have local officials who are elected to office • Examples; monarchy such as Saudi Arabia

  5. Confederation • Local government has the power and shares it with the federal government. • Central government only has the power the local government is willing to give. • Examples of confederation; League of Arab States or (OPEC)

  6. Federal • Power is shared among different levels of government • Power is in the Federal government and state/local government is given power • Example; Israel

  8. Governments SS7CG4 The student will compare and contrast various forms of government. a. Describe the ways government systems distribute power: unitary, confederation, and federal. b. Explain how governments determine citizen participation: autocratic, oligarchic, and democratic. c. Describe the two predominant forms of democratic governments: parliamentary and presidential.

  9. Autocratic Government • A government where the ruler has absolute power. • He can enforce any power he chooses • The people do not choose • People can control small local government • Example: Saudi Arabia

  10. Oligarchy • Means “Government by the few” • A political party or small group controls government • People have little or decisions • Similar to autocracy • Example: Ba’ath party Syria

  11. Democratic Government (Democracy) • Comes from Greek word “demos” means people • Power is in the hands of people • The people follow rules • Have a choice in leadership • Decisions are made by majority vote • People can ask the government for help • Examples; Israel, Iraq

  13. Presidential • Elected by the people • Separate branch of the government • Serves a term • Power is in the people • Elected to serve the people • Independent from legislature

  14. Parliamentary • Power is in the people • The head of the parliament • Serves a term • Power is in the people • The head of the legislature is the Prime Minister
