Volume of a Cylinder and Cone

Volume of a Cylinder and Cone. Today we will answer the very important question …. Which holds more ice cream; a small cup or a cone? Predictions?. We know volume is the amount of cubic units that fill a 3-D object. We want to know how to calculate volume for a cylinder and a cone.

  1. Volume of a Cylinder and Cone Today we will answer the very important question …. Which holds more ice cream; a small cup or a cone? Predictions?

  2. We know volume is the amount of cubic units that fill a 3-D object. • We want to know how to calculate volume for a cylinder and a cone. • We will learn how to use our volume formulas to see how much ice cream a cup and cone can hold.

  3. Previous Formulas Learned Area and Circumference of a Circle Circumference is the perimeter (length outside) of a circle. Area is the space inside of an object. Today’s 3D shapes have bases that are circles. We will be using the Area formula to help us find our Volume.

  4. Volume of a Cylinder • Label the BASE and HEIGHT of the cylinder below: Height of the Cylinder! Base of the Cylinder! What shape is the base of a cylinder? A CIRCLE

  5. Cylinder • Formula • B = Area of the base • h = Height • r = Radius • = Pi = 3.14

  6. Cone • Formula 3 3

  7. Cone • How does are a cone and cylinder related? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZACAU4SGyM

  8. Volume of Cylinders Class Practice 18 cm 10 cm The diameter is 10. What is the radius? 5

  9. Volume of Cylinders Class Practice 12 cm 7 cm The diameter is 7. What is the radius? 3.5

  10. Volume of Cones Class Practice 3 20 cm 12 cm The diameter is 12. What is the radius? 6

  11. Volume of Cones Class Practice 3 11 cm 8 cm The diameter is 8. What is the radius? 4

  12. Volume of Cones Class Practice 3 30 cm 16 cm The diameter is 16. What is the radius? 8

  13. A Note on Measuring Height of a Cone

  14. Activity: Which will hold more ice-cream; a cup or a cone? You will need: Graph paper (one for the cone, one for the cylinder) Activity Worksheet Cup Cone Extra-practice Worksheet if you finish early.
