High Ability in Indiana • G/T Mandate 2007 • S.B. 408 passed unanimously by the Indiana House of Representatives and Senate and signed by the Governor • All schools shall identify students with high ability using multifaceted assessment to ensure that students not currently identified by traditional assessments due to economic disadvantage, cultural background, underachievement, and disabilities are included. • Must identify in the general intellectual or specific academic domains in grades K-12 and record those designations on the Student Test Number.

Highlights of SB 408 • Develop and implement local services for high ability students, including appropriately differentiated curriculum and instruction in the core academic areas designated by the state board for each grade (K-12) consistent with federal, state, local, and private funding sources.

HA Coaches • Participate in the High Ability (HA) student identification process, assessing new students and designing educational programming to help them meet Indiana’s Academic Standards. • Work with teachers at their request to assist in differentiating instruction in core subject areas for identified HA students in the regular classroom. • Consult with classroom teachers, providing assistance with enrichment activities in the regular classroom for identified HA students. • Provide information to teachers regarding scientifically-based reading research for HA students in a continual quest for improvement of instruction.

HA Coaches (continued) • Work with the principal to coordinate and monitor the implementation of the School Improvement Plan as it relates to HA. • Assist with the purchasing and organization of HA materials. • Create and maintain on-going parental involvement regarding the HA program in the school. • Maintain records for identified HA students as required. • Attend workshops and conferences that are related to High Ability education. • Exercise good judgment in handling confidential information and correspondence. • Perform such other duties for identified HA students and their teachers as may be assigned by the Principal or his/her designee.

Longfellow ElementaryBonnie Walling, HA Coach • Shine Time:  a 30 minute block of time that focuses on RTI Mrs. Walling has a group of children at that time who work on HA project based learning.  Projects this year include:  Bubble Science, Poetry Writing, Creating an original Christmas play, Plant sSience, plus much more • BP Energy Grant:  Mrs. Walling wrote a grant to BP to teach children about wind energy.  She received $5,000 to buy all sorts of resources including FOSS materials, NEED, etc. • Poetry Submissions:  HA students wrote poetry for the Young American Poetry Contest.  They are eagerly waiting for results. • A few students have written a book to be submitted to the Northwest Indiana Reading Council’s Young Authors to be held the first Saturday in May. • Other Exciting News:  Students are encouraged to participate in 4-H clubs held during their lunch/recess as well as a Spanish club for students in K-5.
