Course Description: • program for high school jrs. & srs. on a shared-time basis • academic pathway leads to a career in health care • Students can earn up to 3 college credits from BCC towards a degree in Nursing & 8 college credits from UMDNJ • students can transfer to another 2 or 4-year college after completion of this program

  4. Shared Time Programsoffers: • Opportunity to acquire academic/high school requirements at their home school for half of the day, • Opportunity to pursue a career and acquire life skills necessary to succeed in a health science/technical field of their choice through MCVSD • Opportunity to receive college credits.

  5. High School Credits Earned: • 2-Year Program: Total of 40 credits • Level 1: • TP Nursing 1 10 credits • ICTE Math I 5 credits • Chemistry/ICTES 5 credits • 20 credits • Level 2: • TP Nursing2 10 credits • ICTE Math II 5 credits • ICTE Science II 5 credits • 20 credits

SCHOOL-TO-CAREER OPPORTUNITIES/INTERNSHIP • Level I students participate in touring various departments at local health care facilities. • Level 2 students spend 1-2 days a week (16-24 hours total) at a nursing home to practice patient skills and complete requirements for their Home Health Aide certification.

  12. Clinical Overview • Level 1 students tour local hospitals • Level 2 students engage in “hands on” clinical experience at a local nursing home one day a week from January-April

Uniform Requirements: • Name tag • Royal blue tops and bottoms—clean and pressed • Clean white sox and shoes • Hair neat and pulled up and off the collar—no unusual colors or hair bands • Digital wrist watch or one with second hand • No jewelry other than wrist watch and one pair of post earrings allowed. • Must bring a small notepad with a black ink pen

  14. Nail Policy for Clinical: • Nails must be kept short (< 1/8 inch beyond finger tip) • Only pale non-chipped polish allowed • No artificial nail tips or gels!

  15. CERTIFICATES UPON GRADUATION • Monmouth County Vocational School Program Certificate • Skills Profile • Home Health Aide certification (must follow NJ Board of Nursing requirements) • CPR certification for healthcare providers

  16. Attendance Policy for Program: • Good attendance is expected of all tech prep students! • If you are absent, parents are to call our office @ 732-671-0650 and give student’s name, class, and reason for absence. • Home schools do not pass on that information to us! • Students are responsible for any missed work • If a student has poor attendance, they may be asked to leave the program or not be recommended to return for level 2.

  18. Program Requirements: • Uniform for level 1 & 2 • Parents must pay for physical exam at own MD and required blood work—due by September of senior year

  19. Teenagers and Work: • Research studies show that students who work > 15 hours/week in H.S> are less likely to complete college.

  20. Teens Need More Sleep • Teenagers need 8 ½- 9 hours of sleep per night • Establish a sleep routine • We encourage you to limit use of the computer, cell phone, and TV in your child’s bedroom at night • Limit caffeine, especially in the late afternoon and night

Your Tech Prep Nursing/Allied Health Instructors: • Mrs. Catherine Dillon, RN, MSN, CSN, SANE • >30 years experience as an RN in areas such as Medical-Surgical, ICU, Dialysis, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplant Coordinator and Plasmapheresis Nurse • Obtained Teaching Certificate via Alternate Route through Stockton State College NJ • Certified School Nurse in NJ • SANE Nurse (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) • Worked in MCVSD for the last 13 years, teaching in the LPN (adult nursing program) and with the Tech Prep Nursing Students
