  3. LESSONS LEARNEDFOR SUCCESS • THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE IS NOT THE TOOL, OR EVEN THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE TOOL… • IT IS CULTURE AND ADOPTION

ARCHITECTURE • Three distinct environments: • Test/DREN, Staging, and Production • Fully redundant (load balancing and failover) • Integrated SharePoint and Microsoft Office Project Server • Authentication requires a unified active directory • Add-on tools for backup and restore • Add-on tools for virus scanning • Add-on tools and separate architecture for migrations (2003-2007 and 2007-2010)

  5. DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION • Focus on IA approved web parts (ex. Bamboo) to limit custom development/costs • Select an effective Search Tool • Tool needed for IA code review for web parts: Fortify • Have a central location for user information: • POCs, Web Parts/App Store, Training, & Lessons Learned https://wiki.kc.us.army.mil/wiki/Sharepoint

  6. DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION • Use three main types of SharePoint sites: My Sites, Publishing Sites, and Team Sites MySites Replace Shared Drives and Provide Social Networking/Knowledge Sharing

GOVERNANCE • Development and implementation of formal governance and procedures • Roles & Responsibilities • Automated New Site Request, Review and Approval Process • Baseline Definition (Size, Number of Users) • Information Assurance and PII • PII • Security Scans • Restricted File Types • Spillage Procedures • Metrics: Site Storage Allocation/Usage Statistics
