  3. Welcome to Photo Chop! During this lesson we will be exploring… But before we start, let’s recap on what we learnt during our last lesson… • The art of collage Image: http://ubuntudigest.blogspot.co.nz/2010/05/polaroid-frame-effect-using-gimp.html http://knightranger.deviantart.com/art/Polaroid-Frame-105135700 http://pixdaus.com

  4. has influenced many artists to think about how they make art. From painters to photographers and sculptors • started from a group of artists and writers who wanted to create art in a new and different way During our last lesson we learnt that Surrealism… • artworks are generally based on dreams, imagination and fantasy. Sometimes they use familiar objects and make them appear strange or mysterious • offered people a chance to look at things in a different way and change how we felt about the world we live in

  5. Let’s start this lesson by exploring “The art of collage”. Image:http://teetzelphotography.blogspot.co.nz/2010/07/photo-montages.html

  6. Artists would assemble and glue different materials to a piece of paper or canvas. These materials would include: Collage For many artists making a collage was a way of recycling materials and using them in an interesting and creative way • coloured paper • newspaper clippings s v a g • ribbons This meant they could focus on assembling these images and text in a certain way so to communicate their idea or message e A “collage” has become a popular way to create art What is a Collage? And how do you make one? • photographs • bits of artwork or text • and other interesting • objects Image: http://www.rgbstock.com/photo/n3cU7wY/Crumpled+Coloured+Paper+Blue http://designerwallcoverings.com/WallpaperStore/natural-textiles-and-ecotextures-rice-papers-c-1604_67_72/romano-rice-paper-03-ocre-p-1169 http://ramonabarsalona.blogspot.co.nz/2011/05/newspaper-clippings-to-be-edited_10.html http://depositphotos.com/1223562/stock-illustration-Gold-medal-with-yellow-ribbon.html http://www.clker.com/clipart-26981.html http://www.royalhigh.edin.sch.uk/departments/departments/CDT/ahgc_0708_blender_vegetation.html http://www.anderes-spielen.de/epages/61855634.sf/en_GB/?ViewObjectID=30654906

  7. Over the years many artists used collage in different ways

  8. Mixing collage with painting Pablo Picasso Pablo Picasso Kurt Schwitters Artists Pablo Picasso and Kurt Schwitters were the first to mix collage with their paintings and drawings. They would use text or pictures that worked well with their painting or drawing. 9. Mixing collage with wood Louise Nevelson Kurt Schwitters Artist Kurt Schwitters started attaching various wooden objects to his paintings giving them a 3 dimensional look. However artist Louise Nevelson created actual 3 dimensional collages, by attaching wooden furniture together, as you would with pictures on a paper collage Image: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=586232 http://glimmeringprize.blogspot.co.nz/2011/01/inspiration-louise-nevelson.html

  10. Collage as decoration Juan Gris Decoupage is a form of collage where a combination of colour cut outs and special painting effects are used. Artist Juan Gris has used painting effects to make the newspaper clipping he used appear painted. This form of collage was commonly used to decorate small objects or furniture. Image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decoupage

  11. Photomontage Hannah Hoch made in 1924 Photomontage using photographs and computer software made in 2010 Photomontage is a form of collage using cut out photographs assembled together to create an overall image. Over time technology became more advanced. This allowed artists to use computers and photographs to create fantasy like imagery. Photomontage provided a strong way for artists to communicate their message. Artists were using photographs of things people would recognise. Artist Hannah Hoch often combined cut out photographs of the male and female body, creating collages that communicate her strong belief in woman’s rights. 12. Digital Collage Matt Wisniewski Jennifer Mason Digital collage is a form of collage making where artists mostly use computer software to change the appearance of their photographs. They often change their original photographs and carefully combine them so they appear visually realistic The artwork from NZ artist Jennifer Mason, gives us the impression that a mirror is positioned at the end of the room. If we take a closer look, there are two identical photographs with one on top of the other, making it appear as though there is a mirror. With technology being so advanced it is becoming harder to tell what is real and what is fake. 13. As we have seen, Collage uses a variety of materials and can be a creative way to make art… Let’s recap on what we have learnt so far…

  14. What have we learnt so far? Collage • was originally made by assembling materials such as newspaper clippings, coloured paper, photographs, bits of art or text and other interesting objects to canvas or paper • provided artists to think about how images communication and which images or text to use communicate the right idea or message • started to change over time. Artists were creating and mixing collage with painting, wood, sculpture, furniture, photography and computers

  15. In the next lesson we will explore “Technology VS Painting”. End of lesson
