WEEB Projects Challenges & Needs “Environmental education is a lifelong learning process that leads to an informed and involved citizenry having the creative problem-solving skills, scientific and social literacy, ethical awareness and sensitivity for the relationship between humans and the environment, and commitment to engage in responsible individual and cooperative actions. By these actions, environmentally literate citizens will help ensure an ecologically and economically sustainable environment." ? You

WEEB Mission Home Mission Purposes Beliefs Priorities To provide leadership in the development of learning opportunities that empower Wisconsin citizens with the knowledge and skills needed to make wise environmental decisions and take responsible actions in their personal lives, workplaces and communities. Who are we?

  6. WEEB Purposes To provide positive leadership, advocacy and policy making in the comprehensive arena of environmental literacy and education. Home Mission Purposes Beliefs To advocate the development and implementation of interdisciplinary environmentally-based curricula at all levels of the educational system. Priorities To support the development of local leaders and their fellow citizens to become environmentally aware and concerned enough to act on environmental issues. Who are we? To support the continuing professional developmentof staff working at all levels of formal or informal education to enable them to accomplish needed environmental education goals.

Model environmental education programs should beencouragedand promoted throughout the state. More Beliefs

  8. More WEEB Beliefs Relevant environmental curricula and instructional materials need to be available and used in all educational delivery systems. Teachers and other leaders should be able to obtain continuing professional development in order to provide environmental education of the highest possible quality for all citizens of the state. Agencies, educational institutions, private organizations and businesses need to work in partnership to provide quality environmental education for everyone. Home The Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB) is made up of representatives from: Mission • Department of Public Instruction • Department of Natural Resources • University of Wisconsin System • Wisconsin Technical College System • One majority and one minority party • senator • One majority and one minority party • representative • Nine members representing various • environmental, social and economic • professions. Current Challenges and Needs Ability to fund non-forestry projects severely restricted Available funds/yr are ~ $30,000/year instead of $230,000 Maximum award reduced to $5,000 from $20,000 With the passage of the 2001-2003 State biennial budget, $200,000 in general program revenue was replaced with $200,000 in segregated fee funds. Home Prior legislation dictates that the segregated fee money may only be used for forestry education projects. What is EE? WEEB WEEB established a $200,000 school forest grant program Projects Challenges & Needs ? You More than 50% of previously funded proposals exceeded new $5,000 limit. See WEEB web page.
