  1. Everything You Need to Know About Mobility Scooters

  2. The scooter is one of the most popular means of transportation today. Each manufacturer of these scooters offers a variety of parts that can help disabled people regain much of their independence. Many scooter users have found that they are doing much more than in recent years, thanks to their newly discovered increased mobility.

  3. Do You Need a Mobility Scooter? • If you have trouble walking for a long period of time, and find it difficult to control a walker, cane or crutches, then a scooter might be for you. • Scooters are also useful for people who use oxygen and need to save energy. • Individuals who suffer from persistent joint pain, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can also benefit from using a scooter.

  4. Paying for a Mobility Scooter • Many scooter sellers are enrolled in Medicare to cover part, if not all, of the cost of buying one of their cars. They will bill Medicare and all they need is a form signed by the doctor stating that the patient needs a scooter to get around because of the disability. • If your doctor does not think you need a medical scooter but feel that using it will improve your mobility, you can still purchase them directly from the manufacturer or retailer. • Some mobility scooter resellers offer their own funding programs in addition to big discounts on refurbished or closed models. The base models cost roughly $900. The all-wheel drive off-road models cost approximately $3,000 or more.

  5. Two, Three or Four wheels? • Depending on the intended use of the scooter, owners can choose from a two-, three- or four-wheeled model. • The two-wheeled models are more like the folding scooter you see on the road. They can move two to three times faster than a three- or four-wheeled model. • Three-wheeled portable scooters are lightweight models that do well both indoors and on paved roads or sidewalks. • Four-wheeled models are heavier and serve different purposes. The heavy-duty four-wheel model can roll on gravel roads and other unpaved surfaces while navigating public buildings with ease.

  6. Scooter Basics & Accessories • The scooters have manual controls and a steering column that allows users to drive forward, turn in any direction, and drive in reverse. • Most scooters are low in profile, which means they can serve as a chair in restaurants or at a table in your own home, and are narrow enough to fit through most doorways in a home or public building. Most mobility outdoor scooters are less than 24 inches wide. • Apart from the scooter, you can buy accessories that will make it easier to move and use the all terrain scooter.

  7. Try before You Buy • If possible, try the scooter before purchasing. If there is a cell phone store in your area, head to the showroom and sit on the different models and take a test drive of your favorite power wheelchair if possible. • What you should pay attention to when buying a scooter for getting around: • Does the chair have enough cushions? • Does the chair easily rotate from side to side or is it stationary? • Is the chair adjustable up or down? • Is there enough room to rest your feet comfortably? • How long does it take to fully charge the battery? • How far can you travel before the battery needs recharging? • How fast can a scooter go? • What is the maximum weight the scooter can handle? • Is a scooter of this size airline-friendly? • Is the scooter easy to transport (easy to disassemble or fold)? • What is the maximum weight of a single part that the owner can lift during transport? • Will service the scooter if there is a problem? • All of these questions need to be answered before buying, especially if the model you are considering is a sale or discontinued scooter. • Also, if you are buying a scooter for someone else, make sure they can lift the scooter and take it apart for transport. If not, make sure that the person using the scooter has a vehicle with a tow hitch so that they can attach the scooter lift for transportation.
