  1. Long Division By: Mrs. Sherri Voerg

  2. We are going to divide. It is easy to do, as long as you follow the steps. Division is like a recipe. The steps must be followed precisely and in order for the problem to come out correctly. The following silly sentence will help you remember the division steps: Does My Sister Chew Bugs & Rats? D = Divide M = Multiply S = Subtract C = Check B = Bring down R = Repeat or Remainder

  3. Here is a division problem to work out:

  4. Step 1 is Divide We need to decide how many times 14 will go into 16. It will go 1 time.

  5. Step 2 Multiply We need to multiply 14 x 1. 14

  6. The next step is to Subtract. - 14 2

  7. Step 3 is to Check. We need to make sure that the answer to our subtraction problem is smaller than our divisor, 14. - 14 2 2 is smaller than 14, so we can go to the Next step.

  8. The next step is to Bring Down. 7 - 14 27

  9. The next step is to Repeat. We go back to step one and Divide. We need to decide how many times 14 will go into 27. 14 x 2 = 28 and that is bigger than 27. So we will use 14 x 1 = 14.

  10. 1 7 14 27

  11. The next step is to Multiply. 1 7 - 14 27 14

  12. The next step is to Subtract. 1 7 - 14 27 - 14 13

  13. The next step is to Check. We need to be sure that the answer to our subtraction problem is less than the divisor 14. 1 7 - 14 Since it is, we can go on to the next step. 27 - 14 13

  14. The next step is to Bring Down. Since there are no numbers to bring down, we do not repeat, but use the 13 as our Remainder. 1 R 13 7 - 14 27 - 14 13

  15. Congratulations. . .you have just completed a long division problem. If you would like to see a video of me working out another problem, click on the video below.
