Definition of fertile Crescent • Fertile Crescent- A large arc of rich, or fertile farmland. • Also Fertile Crescent is – Rich farmland in Southwest Asia where the first civilizations began
So where is it? • Let’s use some modern day terms/locations to describe where the “original” fertile crescent is located. • Let’s put it into the K-W-L

First question answer • What makes the fertile crescent so fertile? • It is fertile because of something called SILT. Silt is a mixture of rich soil and tiny rocks. Flood waters from the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers brought this silt in and made the land ideal for growing crops.
The fertile crescent shows some evidence of early developments such as: • Farming- crops/agriculture that humans grow in order to produce food for life. • Basin- a generally flat region surrounded by higher land • Irrigation- a way of supplying water to an area of land. • To irrigate there land they dug out large storage basins to catch rainwater that fell to the north. • Canals- human made waterways. • These canals connected to the basins, talked about above, and drained into ditches that then spread out the water collected.
