Early Warning Signs Were Ignored Testimony by Parents and Students Revealed School Administration School staff And The Sheriffs department ignored Many warning signs which could have prevented the tragedy at Columbine
Danger Signs Ignored The intentions of the assailants were • Published on a Web Site • Written and talked about in School Presentations • Enacted on Video Tapes
A graphically violent English-class essay by Klebold portrayed a protagonist in a black trench coat executing “college preps” The Trench Coat Mafia was menacing students with repeated warnings of their intentions Harris and Klebold boasted plans for mayhem to friends and acquaintances
Bullying at Columbine was rampant Parents testified that administrators and teachers turned their backs on alienation and bullying by Jocks
One year before the shootingsSheriff’s county investigatorsdrafted asearch warrantfor the home ofHarrisbased on reports ofa violent web site and possession of guns and bomb making materialsbut the search was never conducted Months before the shootings, The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Dept. alerted the school district that Eric Harris was being investigated for making pipe bombs but told educators to take no action
Some Early Warning Signs Counselors and School Staff Should Know • Social withdrawal • Excessive feelings of rejection • Excessive feelings of isolation and being alone • Feelings of being picked on and persecuted • Expression of violence in writing • Uncontrolled anger
History of drug and alcohol use • History of discipline problems • Past history of violent aggressive behavior • Intolerance of differences and prejudicial attitudes • Affiliation with gangs • Inappropriate access to, possession of, and use of firearms
Although, this information can be helpful in identifyingdanger signs, it still needs to be taken with a bit of caution
Early Warning signs can be used to shape intervention Practices Understanding the early warning signs that could preclude violent behavior can help counselors and other school staffidentify troubled students, before the problems escalate into a tragic situation
