  4. 1) Animism • Animals, trees, stones, etc have spirit (anima) • Spirit can either help or hurt humans • Almost every animal, mountain, or sea has been worshiped

  12. 5) Totems • Feeling of kinship that humans have for other creatures or nature • extension of animism • Examples: Bear considered ancestor of clan which possesses characteristics of bear

  14. 6) Sacrifice • Everything imaginable has been sacrificed • Not just animals • grain, wine, milk, jewelry • Human sacrifices are rare, usually enemies

Sacrifice Meanings • Feeds the spirit world (soil absorbs water, wine, milk) • Santa Clause effect (leave food in a place & assume gods ate it when it’s gone) • Simply a gift to spirit world • Implies common bond between spirits and humans
