The impact of production and distribution of chemical substances and products is estimated at €4,243 million, equivalent to 2.4% of Greece's GDP in 2016, of which €3,074 million (72%) are due to the chemical industry and €1.179 million (28%) are due to the wholesale trade of chemical substances and products. It is estimated that each euro spent on the chemicals market increases GDP by €1.9 in total Overall, each job in the production and distribution of chemical products is linked to 5.7 jobs in the economy

  8. COAGULLANTS TRANSPORTATION • Aluminum or Iron (Sulfate or chloride) • Solids or liquids. The majority are in aqueous solution including aluminum sulfate or ferric chloride. • Acidic or alkaline. Aluminum salts such as poly aluminum chloride have a certain level of alkalinity which is deliberately engineered. • Able to bond with different numbers of atoms (two or three valence).  Iron salts can be applied in two valences: ferric or ferrous. Volume approx. 4 millions ton / year or 160.000 trucks/year Coagulants Class 8 Corrosive PG II & III

  11. SQAS (Safety & Quality Assessment for Sustainability) It is a system of uniform third party assessments to evaluate the performance of Logistics Service Providers and Chemical Distributors. SQAS assessments cover quality, safety, security, environment and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). SQAS is not a certification system; it is an assessment system that provides a detailed factual assessment report. The SQAS assessment reports allow chemical companies to evaluate their logistics service providers according to their own standards and requirements.

  12. SQAS modules • All transport companies and other types of service providers that are active in land logistics and chemical distribution are covered by SQAS through five separate modules: • Transport Services • Rail Operators • Tank cleaning stations • Warehouses • Chemical distributors

Benefits of using SQAS • A key tool in the Risk Management of logistics operations, as part of Responsible Care • Five SQAS modules covering the different types of Logistics Service Providers active in land logistics • Common and uniform industry assessment questionnaires • Trained and accredited SQAS assessors • Easy access to all assessment reports via a central SQAS database • No duplication of assessments by individual chemical companies • Supported and used by most chemical companies and logistics service providers https://www.sqas.org/

The working procedure is as follows Company to be SQAS assessed • Register your user account (if no account registered yet) • Complete the Online PAD • Select one (or more) assessor(s) to share/send the PAD (read-only) and send an automated e-mail notification SQAS Assessor • Gets an e-mail notification about the received PAD • Opens and evaluates the PAD (read-only) • If the assessor has doubts, he/she contacts the company, clarifies and ask the company to modify the PAD, if needed • Imports the PAD in the report of the planned assessment

  15. Intervention in Chemical transport Emergencies • ICE (Intervention in Chemical transport Emergencies) is a co-operative program, set up by Europe's chemical companies to achieve this goal. In each European country, it seeks to create a framework for providing assistance in an effective way: • by making use of the emergency response schemes of individual chemical companies • by building on existing emergency response schemes - local, regional and product-related (chlorine, isocyanates, ethylene oxide, etc.); • by co-operating with national authorities through the National Chemical Federation; • by promoting mutual assistance within the chemical industry.

ICE Level of support by the chemical industry • Participation in a national emergency scheme is voluntary but requires a company's commitment to provide help in land-based distribution incidents on the request of the competent authorities. Depending on the capabilities and resources of a company, there are three levels of intervention: • Level 1: Remote product information and general advice by telephone or fax. • Level 2: Advice from an expert at the scene of an incident. • Level 3: Assistance with personnel/equipment at the scene of an incident.

Best practices in chemical logistics • Supply Chain Visibility – Chemical companies need to know how their products are being handled at every stage of the shipping process. • Effective Information Management – A robust reporting system is essential, but too much raw data can be overwhelming. Information should be communicated in a meaningful and engaging way. • Active Participation in Supply Chain Issues by Multiple Shipper Departments – To do the best work, everyone from production to customer services to sales needs to be plugged into discussions. • Current Market Intelligence – An effective two-pronged approach involves staying abreast of both the overall transportation market (e.g., knowing carrier rates and who the players are in your areas) and the chemical-specific market (e.g., knowing the current rules for shipping hazardous materials). • Strong Carrier Relationships – Transparency and regular, planned communication is key to strengthening relationships among all parties.
