  1. PROJECT SANET II Pavol Horváth, Marian Ďurkovič, Tibor Weis SANET Slovak Academic Network Association horvath@sanet.sk, md@bts.sk, tibor@pobox.sk I 

  2. PROJECKT SANET II • Goals of the project • Adopted by Slovak Government in May 2001 • Finance plan for 2001 - 2002: 5.5 mil.EUR • Build up a new country wide optical infrastructure • Connecting all Slovak universities other academic sites • Build up MANs in the 8 main regional centres • International connection to GEANT Network • Upgrade connectivity to INTERNET

  3. Organisation of the project • All decisions are made by Project Steering Committee reported direct to minister of education of the SR • We have received a world price for leased FO for the regional infrastructure • The Tender was open for alll suppliers for • Leased Dark fibber lines ( one pair for the long distance) • To sell a free duck • To build up the FO lines for SANET mainly in the MAN

  4. Basic Technology • Fibre optic infrastructure only • Technology switched Ethernet

  5. Current situation • First 550 km optical infrastructure - 1Gbpsnetwork Bratislava - Košice ( a main part of Slovak backbone is working ) • The next 400 km is finalized ( in the next 2-3 months) • 12 km MAN in Bratislave in the SANET ownership with the 1Gbps MAN • The same situation in the Cities Nitra, Kosice • In the next 2 month will be finalized 1Gbps MAN network in the other 5 main Cities in the Slovakia

  6. Project follow up in the 2003 • Finalization all steps of the country wide optical infrastructure • The 10 Gbps switched Ethernet on the MAN in Bratislava and also in the part of backbone infrastructure was tested • Upgrade of international capacity to 355 Mbps • The new Multimedia application and services • IP telephony • IP video - real video from SATELITE ASTRA • SW free (www.videolan.org) • Teleconferences

  7. SANETII network throughput measurement • SANET2 network throughput measurement was done from 16 to 31 July 2002 during full production operation • we did not use any special part of SANET2 network for testing • The distance between Zvolen and Bratislava is 265km.

  8. The main goal of our measurement was: • To verify real capacity of SANET II network • To find out error rate during high volume data transfer • To check out limit of used network components

  9. How was measured • 2 Servers Sun Fire V880 with gigabit Ethernet network cards was used • These servers were together connected by three ways • The reason was to get comparative results> • Local interconnection through L2 switch – both • Servers were on the same IP network • Local interconnection through L3 switch – the servers was on two different IP network • Remote interconnection through L3 switches – the servers were in two cities connected to different IP network

  10. The main goal of this measurement was: • To verify real capacity of SANET II network between TU Zvolen and STU Bratislava • To check out the influence of 3ms delay caused by 265km distance on data transfer • To check out error rate during high volume data transfer •  All tests and measurements were performed during working days when average network load measured by Cisco IOS’s was 8%

  11. Summary Following results: • Using bigger TCP window, as is default set up in Solaris9, the delay caused by distance is negligible. • During high volume data transfer with average network load above 80% the error rate is still zero. • Network technology – switched gigabit Ethernet is suitable also for long distance • Network architecture where all backbone routers are connected to one VLAN allows us to transfer data on L2 level. • SANET II network is able to provide with real end-to-end network capacity up to 895Mbps in real operation to its users.
