  2. Mission Statement   To provide for the education and employment related needs of limited English proficient adults who live and work in Arlington.

  3. BACKGROUND • 1976 – began as a program for Asian refugees in Arlington (Refugee Education and Employment Program) • 1983 – opened to all immigrant groups • 2001 – program entirely on-line • Based on national standards (REEP used as a framework)

  4. Program Overview • 9 levels of classes, intensive – nonintensive, full and part time • Fairfax and Prince William counties also use REEP • Focus on lifeskills, literacy and education • Needs based, whole language curriculum • Entirely on line: registration, curriculum, lesson plans, lessons, resources

  5. REEP: Available 24/7 • Role relevant - addresses employment, family and community roles • Learner-centered – based on skills needed to function in today’s society • Systems relevant: healthcare, banking • Learning strategies to include test taking skills and research skills • Team work and social “talking” • Technology training – intro to e-mail and Internet

  6. CURRICULUM OVERVIEW • Entirely on line • Students must take”Getting Started” and “Final Relections” units + 3- 4 units per course • Needs assessment determines units • Each course runs 11 – 12 weeks • Each level has up to 10 units offered • 20 – 30 instructional hours/unit

  7. Assessments Overview • Placement assessment by staff • Needs assessment by instructor to identify curriculum/lessons • Performance based by instructor • Correct Placement? • Progress?

Interactive Approach • Technology integrated throughout units • ESL software • Web based activities with links related to performance objectives, sample REEP lesson plans integrating technology & web-quests • Links to online audio and video resources • VHS and cassette recordings • Technology Curriculum offered as a lesson
