  1. On Our Way To Cedar Point A Web Quest by: Joe Mastracy EDU 505 10/25/09

  2. Introduction • You are a thrill-seeker. Someday you plan to go sky-diving. However, money doesn’t grow on tree’s so you have decided to do the next best thing; journey to the rollercoaster capital of the world. It is a wonderful place, located in the town of Sandusky, where the Southern tip of Lake Erie meets the Northern border of Ohio. The sunsets there are truly amazing.

  3. Task • You and a friend of your choice (I took my girlfriend, she had a wonderful time) will plan a trip to the rollercoaster capital of the world. You will be planning to arrive there on a Tuesday morning, and leave on Thursday. (It is less busy during the week) • You will be given a budget of $500. -Keep in mind, EVERYTHING must be accounted for in this budget. This includes travel expenses, hotel room, meals, admission into the park, souvenirs, and anything else you and your pal may be interested in doing. (I personally went parasailing, and it was something I will never forget)

  4. Process • You have a Nissan Sentra, 2006. Not the best car ever but it gets 30 miles to the gallon. You will be driving from Oswego, NY, to Sandusky, Ohio. (It’s way cheaper than flying) The trip is a little over 400 miles. You will leave at about 5:00AM on Tuesday morning, and you will plan on arriving by 12:00 Noon at the latest. You must try to budget this trip as best as possible, so that you don’t go over $500. This means that you must try to figure out how much money you are going to spend on each individual task.

  5. Process Continued • If Cedar Point is 400 miles away, and gas is $2.50 a gallon, how much money will it cost you to drive down there? Remember, you get 30 miles to the gallon and your car has a 12 gallon tank. This means that you can get about 360 miles per full tank of gas. This really means that you will only be spending about $35 dollars to get there, and then another $35 to get back. However, you will be driving to the park from your hotel, and you may also want to drive around the city and check out some of their really cool indoor water parks. (The indoor water parks outside of Cedar Point are way more fun than the actual water park in Cedar Point) So you will most likely end up spending a total of about $100 in gas, leaving you with $400 to work with.

  6. Process Continued • You must decide the best way to go about getting a hotel room. There are certain hotel resorts that are in Cedar Point that come with a package, which includes the room, meals, and admission to the park. It is up to you to decide whether you want to go to one of the inside resorts and buy the package, or go to an outside hotel and pay for everything individually. Remember, food at amusement parks is always extremely expensive, as well as any gifts that you may want to buy. (Outside of the park are gift shops that offer way better prices and have most of the same items)

  7. Process Continued • If you are going to use the package deal, all meals are provided. If you don’t, remember, you will need lunch and dinner on Tuesday, breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Wednesday, and breakfast and possibly lunch on Thursday. Package deals usually start around $300 (for some of the lower-class hotels without indoor pools, etc.) and can get as high as over $1000 dollars. (Some of the higher class hotels) You only have about $400 dollars left after eliminating travel expenses. Should you spend the majority of that for the package deal, and have a little bit left over for souvenirs? Or do you think it would be better to pay for everything individually? The choice is yours and you must evaluate your options carefully. (We ended up using the package deal, and it really saved us a lot of money)

Basically, did you go with the package deal or the individual way? -30 points • Did you check out the gift shops? -15 points • Did you have a good time? -15 points

  11. Evaluation and Conclusion Continued • By the end of this trip, you should have learned a few different things. You should have learned a little bit about money management. This is a skill that is essential to succeeding in life. You should have also learned how to compare and contrast different ways to go about completing this task. Something else that this Web Quest teaches is proper planning. Basically, the better you plan for something, the more likely the chances are that it will run smoothly and go according to schedule. One other aspect that this Web Quest teaches is to simply have fun!
