  2. Location • Choose a location in full sun. • Vegetable require 6 or more hours of direct sun a day • The soil should be well drained • If grass or weeds grow, its probably already well drained.

  3. Put up a Fence • Put a fence around your garden • Helps keep out animals • A 2-3 foot fence is fine unless deer are in the neighborhood • You can use inexpensive wire like poultry netting • Bend the bottom foot of the wire to the outside of the garden to lay right on top of the ground to keep animals from digging under the fence

  4. How to Get More • Some vegetables can be trained to grow up bamboo or metal poles (tomatoes, pole beans, cucumbers and peas.)

  5. Fertilize and Water • Spread fertilizer over the ground in late winter or, an inch depth of compost • Make sure your garden is gets a good watering once a week

  6. Weed Frequently • Pull out the weeds frequently before they grow too big

  7. Get Started! • Plan to plant your garden around the middle of June using small plants • You can sow seeds indoors during the winter to grow your own small plants • To prepare a new garden area, lay several layers of newspaper on existing vegetation, and top it with compost • This will smother the existing vegetation • Plant immediately!
