  1. Functional Architecture for NGN-BasedPersonalized IPTV Services Chih-Hsiang Chou Advisor: Prof Dr. Ho-Ting Wu Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Taipei University of Technology Taiwan, ROC. Data:12/12/12

  2. Outline • IPTV Introduction • NGN Introduction • Conclusion • References

  3. IPTV Introduction • Definitions: Many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams over IP networks, transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems.

  4. IPTV Introduction • Definitions: One official definition approved by the International Telecommunication Union – Telecommunication Standardization Sector focus group on IPTV (ITU-T FG IPTV) is: “ IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service(QoS)/ quality of experience(QoE), security, interactivity and reliability.”

  5. IPTV Introduction IPTV features • Support for interactive TV • Time shifting • Personalization • Accessible on multiple devices

  6. IPTV Introduction

  7. IPTV Introduction

  8. IPTV Introduction

  9. IPTV Introduction

  10. IPTV Introduction

  11. IPTV Introduction • Several Types of IPTV Services: 1) Broadcast type services (linear TV) 2) On-demand type service 3) Other type services

  12. IPTV Introduction

  13. NGN Introduction • Definitions : A next-generation network (NGN) is a packet-based network which can provide services including Telecommunication Services and able to make use of multiple broadband, quality of Service-enabled transport technologies and in which service-related functions are independent from underlying transport-related technologies. It offers unrestricted access for users to different service providers. It supports generalized mobility which will allow consistent and ubiquitous provision of services to users.

  14. NGN Introduction • The NGN functional architecture shall incorporate the following principles: - Support for multiple access technologies - Distributed control - Open control - Independent service provisioning - Support for services in a converged network - Enhanced security and protection - Functional entity characteristics

  15. NGN Introduction

  16. NGN Introduction

  17. NGN Introduction • ITU-T has developed three IPTV architectures that enable service providers to deliver IPTV services - Non-NGN IPTV functional Architecture (Non-NGN IPTV) - NGN-based non-IMS IPTV Functional Architecture (NGN-Non-IMS IPTV) - NGN IMS-based IPTV Functional Architecture (NGN-IMS-IPTV)

  18. NGN Introduction

  19. NGN Introduction

  20. NGN Introduction

  21. Service example

  22. Conclusion • NGN can provide IPTV services more efficiently through managed IP and convergence broadband capabilities. • The challenge to a successful IPTV service lies not only in the underlying transport networks but also in the need for service applications and their platforms to adapt to new business models.
