  2. What is Environmental Education ? Environmental Education (EE) refers to organized efforts to teach how the natural environment works and how human beings can manage their behavior in order to live sustainably (Palmer, 1998; UNCED, 1992; IUCN, 1970) Environmental Education wants to change the way people perceive the environment by ‘touching’ the environment Zurich, the 15th of July

  3. Which methods? • Experiential education:field trips, practical experiments, outdoor activities (e.g. installing sensing stations around the school,…). • Public participation: presentations, internet (sharing data, blog, wiki,…), interview/enquiry. Zurich, the 15th of July

  4. What are the SwissEx EE programs ? • climAtscope : • focussing on environmental monitoring Zurich, the 15th of July

  5. What are the SwissEx EE programs ? • climAtscope : • focussing on environmental monitoring, based on sensing stations • seismo at school : • focussing on seismology, based on sensing stations Zurich, the 15th of July

  6. School web-plateform • “Seismo-at-School” = network ofstations installed in school + “ web-platform” • All schools around Switzerland can have an Access to the real time data : recorded by sismo-sensor at schools and an Acces to catalogue of events: from who it’s possible to localize an earthquake…using sofwares developed for schools. • Softwares: • EduCarte • Viewing the stations on the Google Map • Analyzing the waveform data • Earthquake Data analyzing Schools network concept

  7. 2009-2010 • SED schools networkis now composed by 5 stations installed (Sion, Lausanne, Wattwill, Bülarch, Zürich) and by 16 stations from SED network Seismo at School is partner with O3e Deliverables: Website is update regularly and translation in German, English, French has been done. Publications in German, French and Italian 3 books are now available for schools: -Earthquake lesson (9-13 years) -Earthquake : How and Why (14-18 years) -Cook book activities: Sismo at School (15-18 years) 1 USB key for students and teachers with all O3e information, software’s… -Meeting international in France with 55 teachers -Meeting AGU (San-Francisco) -Meeting EGU (Vienna) -Meeting in Swiss schools

What are the SwissEx EE programs ? • climAtscope : • focussing on environmental monitoring, based on sensing stations • seismo at school : • focussing on seismology, based on sensing stations • GLOBE Switzerland : • focussing on hydrology, biology and cloud • other activities Zurich, the 15th of July

  10. What we already did ? • Internet web page • http://www.seismoatschool.ethz.ch/ • http://eflum.epfl.ch/climatscope/ • http://www.globe-swiss.ch/fr/ Zurich, the 15th of July

  11. What we already did ? • Building a network of stations • Internet web page • Pedagogical notebooks, books and activities Zurich, the 15th of July

  12. What we already did ? • Sensing stations network • Internet web page • Pedagogical notebooks, books and activities • Coordination • Integration in an european project O3E • http://o3e.geoazur.eu/ • Exhibitions (La science ça m’intéresse, Informatica, Base camp,…) • Other activities (sponsoring, newspaper, conferences,…) Zurich, the 15th of July

  13. What we will do ? • Translating • Developping pedagogical activities • Integration of new sensing stations in the network • Writing meteorological books • Continuous training for teachers • Integration of SwissEx EE programs in a long run Zurich, the 15th of July

  14. Conclusion • SwissEx EE part has already sucessfully designed, tested and set up Environmental Education programs (climAtscope, seismo at school,…). • However, in order to integrate them in a long run, some efforts need to be done.
