  2. Capacity Development

  3. Need (The Why) Need What tools do you need to plan?

  4. Need A picture is worth a thousand words

  5. Need National Ocean Policy Challenge Challenges U.S ocean and coastal resource managers, stakeholders and the public to address key ocean challenges.

  6. Need The Tool A key tool to achieve these goals is Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). While there is a wealth of information describing the need for MSP, few resources exist on how to conduct MSP in detail.

  7. Need Where do we want to be? Key Questions What do we want our oceans to look like? What is our future? How do we decide?

  8. Need Aid Our Collective Navigation Tool Proactive at the Core A practical way to create and establish a more rational organization of the use of marine space and the interactions between its uses, to balance demands for development with the need to protect marine ecosystems, and to achieve social and economic objectives in an open and planned way.

  9. Need Developed an accelerated short course for U.S. coastal managers. CMSP-Advancement Training (CMSP-AT) actively popularizes the use of CMSP in the United States through capacity development and network building. Delivered through a highly-interactive, game theory-based curriculum for coastal and marine professionals.

  10. Need Engagement Do you? Regularly? It’s simple…stakeholders must talk to each other PROACTIVELY Understand?

  11. Approach (The What) Approach What do we want our ocean to look like?

  12. Approach Technical Knowledge of the CSMP Process Highly Interactive Specific Learning Objectives Lecture as Little as Possible Make it Fun and Engaging

  13. Approach Maximize Impact Delivers opportunities for peer-to-peer collaborationand mentoring All trainings include core curriculum and enhanced regional modules, collaborative and interactive problem solving activities, and incentives for continuing MSP education and networking.

  14. Approach All Hands on Deck • Each module was developed to build relationships among participants both professionally and personally. • Participants also have several opportunities to interact with each other and the course facilitators, during social events and field trips.

  15. Approach • Based on a traditional component of the MSP process • Derived from a significant literature review, surveys of coastal managers and lessons learned from an expert Steering Committee. Grounded In Reality

  16. Approach Vision Statement Lofty, Vivid, Idealized Desired Outcome Positive Mental Image of Future Economics, Environment, Cultural

  17. Get SMART Approach Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely Will You Know It When You See It?

  18. Innovation (The How) Innovation How do we get there?

  19. Innovation • Over the course of 3.5 days, the training “voyage” gives students a fictional framework with which to practice their planning skills.

  20. Comprised of six planning areas that overlap, complement, and compete with each other. • These planning areas represent the real problems faced by coastal managers across the United States and around the world. • A ½ day field trip related to the curriculum is held on Day 2 of the training. Innovation 2 1 3 6 5 4

  21. Esperanza Island Innovation • Working in teams, participants travel to Esperanza and back home, learning as they progress. • Each day, a new “Leg” of the story is revealed to the participants – diving further into the stages and phases of MSP. • At the completion of the Voyage Story, participants have created a coastal and marine plan for the Island, and have gained valuable skills, resources, and relationships to bring this experience home.

  22. Structure of Learning Innovation • Participants are provided thirty-two (32) specific Learning Outcomes to practice during the course and are essential skills for the MSP process. • Benchmarked to over 100 key questions that are important for coastal managers and other stakeholders to answer while implementing MSP. • Led by a team of three experienced coastal and marine professionals.

  23. Future (The Next Step) Future How do we leverage engagement?

  24. Future Uncovering Your Treasure Win-Win-Win Solutions Focus of Collaboration

  25. Future Ready to Set Sail? What’s on Your Horizon? Plotted the Destination? Are All Hands on Deck? Who Else Needs to Be Onboard?

  26. Future What Did We Learn? It’s Working! 96-98% students said the training had done a “good”, “great”, or “excellent” job preparing them to bring CMSP home. Within 30 days, 90% had shared information from the class with their team. Students met peers, mentors, and mentees

  27. Title of your presentation

  28. Future Impact “Thanks for leading the successful Caribbean Region CMSP-AT workshop. It was an excellent experience both in terms of contents and techniques. There were challenging, real situations that fostered the effective engagement from all participants. All activities were carefully planned, interesting, educative, and fun. A great toolbox for coastal and marine resources managers! A big thank you!” - Ernesto Diaz, Director, Puerto Rico Coastal Management Program

  29. Future Impact “Being relatively new to the concept of CMSP, the CMSP Advancement Training was an invaluable experience. The interactive nature of the training gave me the opportunity to learn hands on what it takes to successfully plan for our coastlines. The week was informative, interesting, and essential to understanding how to cooperate with stakeholders during this process and develop attainable goals and objectives. It was also creative and unique, challenging myself and my fellow classmates to think outside the box. After completing the training, I believe I am better prepared to contribute and provide leadership as our state plans for the future of the Gulf Coast.” -Kristen O'Keefe, Mobile Bay National Estuary Program

  30. Trainings Available in 2014!
