  1. Humpty Dumpty • Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, • Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; • All the king’s horses and all the king’s men • couldn’t put Humpty together again...

  2. Humpty Dumpty • Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, • Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; • All the king’s horses and all the king’s men • couldn’t put Humpty together again... However, his younger brother, Jumpty, was somewhat of a daredevil.

  3. The tube was constructed of very long pipe, He told all his friends-most thought it all hype; He said, I’ll do it again, this time from a height That will make you all tremble with terror and fright. • Jumpty Dumpty slid off a wall, • Jumpty Dumpty was hurt not at all; • He tumbled down a tube from his very high loft • And landed in a bed that was safe and soft.

  4. The tube was raised at MSI, • To a height that exceeded 25 feet high; • the angle was such that it was straight up and down • the jump would be viewed by the entire town. Jumpty sat on the edge of the rail, He looked down at the floor and thought he would fail; The bed at the bottom would be soft and new The problem he worried-It would be built by you!

  5. The bed must be made of paper and tape, • Your bed he thought would not save a grape; • Oh please help me, Jumpty said • Construct a device so I won’t crack my head!

  6. The Learning Cycle (3 steps) Explore Design a “prototype catcher”using: 5 sheets of paper 1 meter of tape Various materials (supplied) Concept Development After the test drop, you may learn a few things about successful designs.

  7. A few guidelines The “bed” (catcher) must be free standing. You will not be allowed to hold the catcher. The egg will fall through a tube then it will leave the tube and fall the last three feet into your “bed” (catcher).

  8. A few guidelines You may only use the materials given to you to build your “bed” (catcher). You do not have to use all the materials.

  9. Please get started • Discussing • Designing • Building • Your team has 20 minutes • for this stage.

  10. Pick up your materials The 20 minutes starts NOW

  11. Concept Application Later, you will get a second chance. We will try to increase our level of successful “catches”. • This is an engineering design problem, • for your team. This is “life or death” situation for Jumpty.

  12. Write some final words to share before Jumpty Dumpty “goes down the tube.” Your final words can be.... (Role) Written by some part of your system (Audience) Written to anyone... or anything (Format) Written in the format of your choice (Topic) The planned “stunt”
