  1. HOW TO CALCULATE A NURSING GPA Created by the Academic and Career Engagement Center of Northwestern State University of Louisiana May 2013

  2. Gpa REQUIREMENTS for the BSN program* • A very important factor in determining a student’s eligibility for enrollment in clinical nursing courses is grade point average (GPA). A minimum GPA of 2.7 is required in all courses for the degree. Students must also earn a minimum grade of “C” in all required biology, chemistry, mathematics, and nursing courses. To help illustrate this point, consider the example below: Sally Mae hopes to formally apply to the BSN program within the next semester or two. On the following slides, view her fall and spring grades to calculate her GPA and see if she meets the minimum requirements for enrollment in clinical nursing courses. *Refer to your University Catalog for a comprehensive list of requirements for admission, progression, dismissal, and graduation (starting on pg. 104 in 2012-13 University Catalog).

  3. SALLY MAE’S Fall AND SPRING Semester Fall 2012 Spring 2013

  4. To calculate GPA, divide the total quality points by the total quality (credit) hours: QP/QHS = GPA fall GPA ______ spring GPA ______ • What was Sally’s fall GPA? • What was Sally’s spring GPA? Using the grades on the previous slide, calculate Sally’s fall and spring GPA.

  5. SALLY MAE’S Fall AND SPRING Semester Fall 2012 Spring 2013 49/17 = 2.882 44/15 = 2.933

  6. To the right is an example of the BSN curriculum worksheet. • Sally’s fall and spring grades have been entered in the appropriate spaces. • Note the following: • The “D” in Chemistry 1070. Per the 2012-13 University Catalog (pg. 106) a minimum grade of “C” is required of all biology, chemistry, mathematics, and nursing courses. • The power of a 1-credit class. The student earned an “A” in University Studies 1000. This “A”, although only from a 1-credit class, generated 4 total quality points (which is greater than the Chemistry 1070 quality points earned). • Notice the total hours, total quality points, and GPA at the bottom left corner.
