  1. Ditsela Trade Union Practice QualificationPresentation 8 August 2019 CHIETA SETA HEAD OFFICE - PARKTOWN

  2. Introduction The Further Education Certificate in Trade Union Practices (FETC: TUPQ) is the first general qualification in trade unionism in South Africa offered by DITSELA as the lead accredited provider in partnership with other labour service organisations. It is the first qualification in this field offered in the form of a Learnership with a strong emphasis on learning within the workplace. Therefore, as a learnership, the curriculum has been designed to make conscious the learning from the union as a work place with its unique practices and experience.

  3. Introduction The purpose of the FETC: TUPQ is to develop a new cadre of leadership in the labour movement through accredited learning resulting from systematising without formalising trade union education. One of the key principles guiding the development, design and delivery of the FETC: TUPQ is that it is based on the needs of the labour movement rather than designed down from unit standards. This ‘bottom-up model’ is embedded in union culture and experience and is reflected in DITSELA’s own education practice such as in the methods used in learning and teaching and in development and design of the learning and teaching content. While identifying and analysing needs will always be a contested terrain, DITSELA strives to use a range of mechanisms and processes to achieve broad consensus about which needs to prioritise. These include amongst others consultation around curriculum development in DITSELA educators’ forums and with education structures of the federations, with the elected representatives of the federations serving on the DITSELA board as well as through conducting occasional research studies into the education needs of trade unions.

  4. General Course Description The learning culminating in this FETC: TUPQ will enable participants to promote and protect the rights of workers, advance economic and social justice for the broader working class. It will also contribute to promoting a trade union perspective in education and training that recognises alternative knowledge constructs, theories and practices. Ultimately, the FETC: Trade Union Practice is aimed at increasing levels of efficiency, effectiveness, coordination and professionalism within the trade union movement.
