  3. ABET: Advisory Council You are being asked to serve on our IE Undergraduate Advisory Council to offer your perspective as we work to improve our program. You are stakeholders in our program, and we seek your advice on our educational objectives and other issues which frame our program.

  4. Today’s Objectives • Educate you on ABET and WSU IME • Your perspective on current trends in IE with implications for education • Discuss deficiencies you see in entry-level industrial engineers • Your high-level input on our overall Program Educational Objectives

  5. ABET “ABET, Inc., the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology, is a federation of 28 professional and technical societies representing these fields.” www.abet.org

  6. ABET Process “Each program … conducts an internal evaluation and completes a self-studyquestionnaire. The self-study documents whether students, curriculum, faculty, administration, facilities, and institutional support meet the established criteria.”

ABET: Program Educational Objectives “Program Educational Objectives are broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that the program is preparing graduates to achieve.” (www.abet.org) • Objectives are consistent with the mission of the institution and ABET criteria • A process based on the needs of the program's various constituencies in which the objectives are determined and periodically evaluated • An educational program, including a curriculum that prepares students to attain program outcomes and that fosters accomplishments of graduates that are consistent with these objectives • A process of ongoing evaluation of the extent to which these objectives are attained, the result of which shall be used to develop and improve the program outcomes so that graduates are better prepared to attain the objectives.”

Addressing Low Enrollment Action: • Outreach to community colleges • Regular contact with advisors • Specific transfer protocols for each college • Special events • Recruitment & marketing materials (See included packet) • Contact management • Departmental scholarships for outstanding students • Launched new website. http://mie.eng.wayne.edu/undergrad. • Launched specialized programs e.g. PMLP Result: IE enrollments doubled+ from 2002 (38) to 2005 (78). AY 01-02: 5graduates  AY 04-05: 12 graduates

Addressing Cross-Listing Action: • Winter 2004  offered Production Control separately. • Spring/summer 2004  separated Simulation Result • by Winter 2005: all core courses taught as exclusively undergraduate sections. • converted all undergraduate courses to 3 credits • free up 13 credits to design specializations. • Instituted first specialization: PMLP Production Management Leadership Program.

ABET 2006: Educational Objectives Building on skills developed in the academic program, and extended by experience and personal self-improvement, the graduates of our program have ability to: • Apply the tools and techniques of industrial engineering to support decision-making, • Formulate and solve problems which integrate technological and human systems, and • Function as a member of high performance teams

  20. ABET 2006: Discussion: Mission Is the mission of the department appropriate? Educate our students for leadership positions in a broad spectrum of employment including: manufacturing, supply chain management and logistics, health care, banking, information management, and related disciplines.

  24. ABET 2006: Discussion: Capstone How can we craft a strong Capstone experience? All design teams are required to submit a final written report and to present their design in an open forum. Both the written and oral report will be evaluated for: • Technical performance • Professional behavior All design teams are required to submit a final written report and to present their design in an open forum. Both the written and oral report are evaluated for: • Technical performance • Professional behavior The audience for this report is an engineering manager who has a stake in the implementation of the results of the project. The Capstone project targets a real world problem defined in collaboration with partners from either a manufacturing or service-sector company. The capstone project team acts as a consulting group and works with the industry partner and the faculty advisory team to define the scope and deliverables of the project
