  7. Immigration in Italy Traditionally a country of emigrants, in the last 20 years Italy has become a country of mass immigration, with about 7.5% of the population fitting that description. Officially, at the end of 2008, foreigners comprised 7.5% of the population or 4,800 000 persons, and increase of 470,000 since the previous year. In some Italian cities, such as Brescia, Milan, Padua, and Prato, immigrants total more than 15% of the population. Since the expansion of the European Union, the most recent wave of migration has been from surrounding European nations, particularly Eastern Europe, and increasingly Asia, replacing North Africa as the major immigration area. In Italy, the 87.3% of immigrants live in the northern and central parts of the country (the most economically developed areas), while only 12.7% live in the southern half of the peninsula.

Some 900,000 Romanians are officially registered as living in Italy, replacing Albanians and Moroccans as the largest ethnic minority group, but independet estimates put the actual number of Romanians at double that figure or perhaps even more. Others immigrants from Eastern Europe are Ukrainians ( 200 000 ), Polish ( 100 000 ),Moldovans ( 90 000 ) Macedonians ( 81 000 ), Serbs ( 75 000 ), Bulgarians ( 54 000 ) East German People ( 41 000 ), Bosnians ( 40 000 ), Russians ( 39 600 ), Croatians ( 25 000 ), Slovakians ( 9000 ), Hungarians ( 8600 ).

Recognition of refugee statusThe application is accepted when the reported acts of persecution are a threat to the life or freedom of the individual concerned. The National Fund for Asylum Policies and Services Allocation of funds in favour of local authorities providing reception services to asylum seekers, refugees and beneficiaries of humanitarian protection.

  11. Students in Italy • In the last five years the number of foreign students has tripled, while in the last 20 years the number has become 30 times bigger. In fact, now they are the 7% of students in Italy. • Foreign students from Europe are 44,3%; the biggest communities are: • - Albania 17,8% • - ex-Yugoslavia 10,2% • - Romania 4,8% • Students from other continents: • Africa with 30%, expecially from Morocco (15,4%); • Asia, especially from China (35,8%) • The highest occurance of these students is in elementary schools (8.3%).

School Integration in Padua • Actually,10% of students in Padua’s schools are from other countries. • Our city is implementing a 3 years plan called “Sustainable ways of Integration” which programs a social integration for people coming from outside of Italy: • - Minors are helped with Italian courses and the promotion of educational interventions. • The bringing up to date of teachers and workers at school with training courses. • Information about the Italian school system, that makes the communication between school and families easier. • The promotion of harmony between different cultures. • The insertion of immigrant women in the working world.

QUESTIONS AND ASNWERS TO A FEMALE FOREIGN STUDENT 1 - When did you come to Italy? 2 - How did you settle here with other guys of your age? 3 - Did your parents settle soon or have trouble? 4 - Have your schoolmates accept you? 5 - Have you had problems with language? 6 – Is it a burden for you to wear the veil? 7 - Is there anyone who doesn’t tolerate the veil? 1 – I was two months old when I came to Italy, so I’ve lived here for 16 years. 2 - I went to all schools here in this city, so I have never changed school and the integration with other boys and girls was never so difficult. 3 - Also my parents settled here very well. 4 - Yes, all my friends and professors are kind to me, and if I need some help they give me their support. 5 - No, because I learned it when I was a child, so there wasn’t the problem of translation or other types. 6 - No, I’m used to wearing it, and it isn’t a problem for me. 7 - No, there is a good group in my class. But if this happened, I wouldn’t listen to the comments.

The gorgeous part of this building is the garden, a typical example of the baroque extension of formal vistas, stretch for 120 ha, partly on hilly terrain.It was inspired by the park of Versailles.
