  1. ENGLISH II Revising the Research Paper

  2. MAKE SURE YOU DO • Create your account at turnitin.com • Follow the instructions on the handout you were given. • It’s available on my web page if you don’t have the handout. • All papers must be uploaded by 3:30 December 3. • Failure to upload the paper will result in an automatic 20% deduction off the final grade. (That’s the equivalent of two letter grades.)

  3. Refer to the person by last name. • You don’t know the person well enough to use the first name! • Use a pronoun once in a while. You don’t have to say the name every time.

  4. Check your paragraph length. You don’t want paragraphs that are too long (half page or more) or too short (2-3 sentences) • A well-written paragraph should have 5-7 sentences. • The first sentence of each paragraph may be your own sentence, which acts as a transition sentence.

  5. In-Text Citations • Make sure every paragraph (except the introduction and conclusion) has AT LEAST one cite. • Make sure the in-text citation comes before the period. There won’t be a period or a comma before the cite. • Cross-reference the in-text cites to the sources listed on the Works Cited page. • If it’s in the text, it must be on the WC page. • If it’s on the WC page, it must be in the text.

  6. Formal Language • Read it out loud to make sure it makes sense! Revise the sentences that are confusing or sound weird. • This is a formal piece of writing. Think about word choice – don’t use slang. • Say “children” instead of “kids.” Say “father” instead of “dad.” Say “mother” instead of “mom.” • Proofread for spelling, grammar, and mechanics. • Run spellcheck!!!!

  7. Quoting vs. Paraphrasing • Have you used the wording from the card? Then it needs to be in quotation marks! Make sure you close the quotation. • If you’ve put the information in your own words, you don’t need to put it in quotation marks. • Either way, the information must be cited in an in-text citation. • You can’t just type the card into the paper. You have to put the information in the form of a sentence!

  8. Check the format of the Works Cited page. • It needs to be titled Works Cited. • It needs to be in the same font size & style as the paper. • Pay attention to spacing and indenting. • Alphabetical order. • Don’t underline the period. • The period goes inside the quotation mark.

  9. Formatting • 5-line heading at left margin (December 3, 2013) • Last name & page # in upper right-hand corner (font has to match paper) • Times New Roman OR Courier New • Font size 12 • Double space the entire paper (including the Works Cited page) • The title of your paper cannot be the name of your person. It must be something original and creative.

  10. The length requirement is a minimum of 2 pages and a maximum of 4 pages. • You MUST stay within that range. • If that means revising to cut something, then do it.

  11. THE PAPER IS PLAGIARIZED IF . . . • Language in paper matches language on cards and it’s not in quotation marks • There are no (or missing) in-text citations. • There is no Works Cited page. ANY ONE OF THESE WILL RESULT IN A ZERO ON THE RESEARCH PAPER.

  12. When It’s All Said and Done By the end of the hour Tuesday, December 3: • The finished research paper with revisions made. • The note cards (only those you used) in the same order as the paper. • The source cards on top of the note cards. • Upload to turnitin.com
