  3. GeForce Consumer Graphics Cards • Graphics Cards Benefits: • Graphics cards increase overall system performance. • Additional monitor support enabled by adding a graphics card has been proven to increase productivity. • Visually intense programs such as Adobe Acrobat Reader are greatly enhanced when powered by GeForce graphics cards. • PNY offers Low-Profile graphics cards to ensure compatibility with “slim-top” PCs found on many corporate desks. • Available in all bus types from legacy PCI and AGP to current PCI-e 2.0 PCI ► ►► ► ► AGP ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► PCI-e 2.0 Newest, fastest bus type Majority of PCs and cards today Conventional bus type Still standard in all PCs Accelerated bus type Phased out into PCI-e Legacy technology ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► New & Future technologies 256MB ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► ► 1792MB

  4. Graphics Cards Bus Types • 3 Bus Types • Compatibility with a consumer’s PC’s bus type is the most important factor in ensuring a satisfied customer who installs their upgrade successfully and doesn’t end up frustrated and return their purchase • There are currently 4 bus types, listed from latest/fastest to oldest/slowest: • PCI-Express 2.0  PCI-Express  AGP  PCI • Things to note: • AGP is going away. Is only relevant for a limited number of users. • PCI-Express 2.0 is the upgrade to PCI-Express. PCI-e 2.0 cards are compatible with PCI-e 2.0 and PCI-e motherboards. • PCI is the “universal” slot. Nearly every PC shipped in the past 15 years has an available PCI slot. Performance is low, but is a safe bet for consumers looking to upgrade older machines or are simply unsure of their bus type.

  5. Graphics Cards Bus Types cont’d • Recognizing Your Graphics Card’s Connector Type • The following picture shows the three current available connectors for your graphics cards.  You can see the AGP, PCI and PCI-Express® 16x connectors.  Make note of the position of their notches as well as the connector position relative to the bracket.

  6. VGA Overview • NVIDIA Naming Conventions -i.e. GeForce 9600GT • First Digit – 9 – Defines the GPU Series • Key indicator of the cards age. The higher the number, the newer the card. • Second Digit – 6 – Defines the GPU Class. • Key indicator of the cards performance. The higher the number, the faster the card. • Suffix – GT – Defines performance within a GPU Class. • Secondary indicator of the cards performance. NVIDIA rates cards as follows (from fastest to slowest) : • Ultra  GTX GTS GT GS • When comparing Verto cards, it is critical to consider all 3 parts of NVIDIA’s naming convention to get a true understanding for a cards performance. A good example is 9600 GT vs. 8800 GT. It may be appear that the 9600 GT is the faster card because it has a “bigger” number, but it’s not the case. The 8800 GT is actually significantly faster even though the “9-Series” is newer. VS.

  7. VGA Overview • NVIDIA Naming Conventions -i.e. GeForce GTX 480 • Prefix – GTX – Defines performance within a GPU Class. • Secondary indicator of the cards performance. NVIDIA rates cards as follows (from fastest to slowest) : • Ultra  GTX  GTS  GT  GS • First Digit – 4 – Defines the GPU Series • Key indicator of board type (400 series). • Second Digit – 70 – Defines the GPU Class. • Key indicator of the cards performance. The higher the number, the faster the card. • When comparing XLR8 cards, take into account all 3 parts of NVIDIA’s naming convention to get a true understanding for a cards performance.

  8. Technologies – Buzz Words • SLI – Acronym for “Scalable Link Technology” • If a card supports SLI, you can put 2 (same GPU) in your system and they will work together for nearly double the performance! • Direct X – Microsoft software language that games developers support • Current versions of Direct X include DX9(XP) and DX10(Vista). DX10 supports more advanced features and is utilized in the latest games that push the envelope for graphics realism. All GeForce 8-Series and 9-Series cards support DX10. GeForce 7-Series and below support DX9. • PureVideo HD – NVIDIA software/hardware for processing video • If a card supports PureVideo HD and a consumer installs NVIDIA’s PureVideo HD software, they will be able to support BlueRay movies. Without NVIDIA’s additional software a PureVideo card will still allow the PC to process any video content significantly faster than a PC without a graphics card. • PhysX – Powerful physics engine • A powerful physics engine enabling real-time physics in leading edge PC and console games. PhysX software is widely adopted by over 150 games, is used by more than 10,000 developers of all types and is supported on Sony Playstation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and PC. • CUDA – Extreme computational power • Enables developers to utilize NVIDIA GPUs to solve the most complex computation-intensive challenges such as oil and gas exploration, financial risk management, product design, medial imaging, and scientific research.
