  1. Welcome

  2. Answers for IndustryOptimizing Network InstallationThe unwritten rules for eliminating callbacks and conflicts. .Gene E. KeyserJune 9, 2009

  3. More than 30 years experience in chemical and biochemical processing including 18 years in water and wastewater systems process, process control, and electrical design. He has been responsible for all phases of projects from process conception through system commissioning. Education: Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, University of Illinois, 1979; B.S. in Chemistry, Duke University, 1975. About Gene Keyser

  4. Optimizing Network Installation • Take Home message • Much of pushback toward Siemens automation and Siemens electrical includes the “difficulty” of working with Profibus DP as it is the native communications standard for Siemens. • Profibus wiring is fundamentally different than either 4-20 mA signals or other communications protocols. • Understand the technical reasoning to overcome the pushback.

  5. Optimizing Network Installation • Routing • Redundant Communications • Termination • Grounding • Station Connections

  6. Optimizing Network InstallationRouting • Plan well or Suffer • No Doubling • No Drops • No Spurs • No Junction Boxes

  7. Optimizing Network InstallationRouting As the cable runs, per segment, without repeaters: • 100 meters for 3-12 Mbps • 200 meters for 1.5 Mbps

  8. Optimizing Network InstallationRouting • Just like fiber • MINIMUM BENDING RADIUS – 10 x O.D. (2 - 4 inches) • Long radius elbows • No LB’s • Bend it, twist it, splice it - • toss it !

  9. Optimizing Network InstallationRouting Certified Type A according to EN 50170 • Impedance: 35 up to 165 Ohm at frequencies from 3 to 20 Mhz. • Cable capacity: < 30 pF per meter. • Core diameter: > 0.34 mm², corresponding to AWG 22. • Cable type: twisted pair cable, 1x2 lines. • Resistance: < 110 Ohm per km. • Signal attenuation: max. 9 dB over total length of line section. • Shielding: CU shielding braid or shielding braid and shielding foil • Belden 3078F and 3079A are certified as Type A, among others.

  10. Optimizing Network InstallationRouting • Minimum separation from AC • 1 foot without metal conduit or tray

  11. Optimizing Network InstallationRedundancy • WHY? • Safety? • Use Profisafe. • Data Integrity? • Use dual modules dual PLC’s, dual instruments, and … as well. • Lack of Confidence? • Do it right once instead.

  12. Optimizing Network InstallationRedundancy • No Copper Loops • Dual Channel Devices • Four Cables per Device (two in, two out) • Counter Directional • Redundant Fiber • Switches, OLM’s, • ?????

  13. Optimizing Network InstallationTermination • This is not a corner to be cut!

  14. Optimizing Network InstallationTermination • Use connectors with terminal resistor • Instrumentation with terminal resistors on board • Both ends, unless • PLC • OLM 6ES7972-0DA00-0AA0

  15. Optimizing Network InstallationGrounding

  16. Optimizing Network InstallationHow so, how so fast? • Signal is actual the differential of (A – B) • Grounding is everything • More correctly stated, equipotential at each end, and all the points between, is everything.

  17. Optimizing Network InstallationGrounding • Unless you’re willing… • Fiber between buildings

  18. Optimizing Network InstallationGrounding • Connect external braid to equipotential connection, NOT foil shield. • Run ground connector between devices in same conduit.

  19. Optimizing Network InstallationConnections • Diagnostics

  20. Optimizing Network InstallationConnections

  21. Optimizing Network InstallationConnections • Feed your local programmer • Coffee

  22. Optimizing Network InstallationConnections

  23. Optimizing Network InstallationFor Discussion • Wireless Profibus DP? • go with Profinet. • Specify certified Profibus devices? • or suffer the difference. • Why set up for 12 Mbps? • The specifiable feature. • Do you really want to answer that phone call?

  24. Optimizing Network Installation • Profibus Trade Organization • info@profibus.com • www.profibus.com

  25. Optimizing Network Installation • Acknowledgements • J. Ljungberg • W. Maffett • M. Stoup • W. Wood
