  2. The HolocaustWhat is it? • The word “holocaust” means a mass destruction and loss of life. • The Holocaust of Europe lasted from 1939-1945. During this time, it is estimated that 6 million Jews and 5 million other minorities were killed.

  3. How did Hitler do it? • Adolf Hitler used propaganda against Jews and minorities to make the Germans believe they would be “better off” without those people.

  4. This poster shows a Jew holding a communist sign and holding lots of money. This poster shows a Jew “cheating” a German woman out of money. It also illustrates Jews as having large noses.

  6. The CageBy Ruth Minsky Sender • Written in 1986 as a memoir of Ruth’s actual experiences during the Holocaust • Was forced into the Lodz Ghetto with her family – her mother was taken from them when she was 16. Ruth with her brothers in the ghetto

What is a Jewish Ghetto? • A Jewish ghetto is a place where Jews, rounded up by the Nazis, lived during World War II until being brought to a concentration camp • Frequently in ghettos, Jews were beaten or killed randomly. Basic food needs were not met and all were forced to wear the Star of David patch. • The ghetto was sealed and Jews could not leave. 230,000 people were confined in this area.

  10. Auschwitz Concentration Camp • Auschwitz began originally as a work camp for Jews, but over time, became a place of death. There existed gas chambers for prisoners too weak or young. • Not only Jews were sent to Auschwitz. Many minorities were also sent there including: gypsies, Poles, and Soviet prisoners of war (POW). • No one knows exactly how many Jews were killed there. It is estimated at 1.1 million.
