  4. 10/26: Tolerance Notes pg. 32L • Tolerance is accepting that other people are different, and not discriminating against others because of those differences. • You don’t have to agree with someone in order to tolerate them.

  5. Throughout history, many groups have been subject to discrimination and intolerance. African Americans during Slavery Jews during the Holocaust Homosexuals throughout history Muslims after 9/11

  6. Q1: What are some different groups of people that you could show tolerance to? • (It needs to be people who are different than you…) • Q2: How can you show tolerance to those people?

  7. Creating “Cultural Competence” • In order to tolerate other people, you should practice cultural competence. • Cultural competence means: • You’re aware of your own values, beliefs, family background, and ethnicity • You appreciate your own culture, along with the diversity of other people and their cultures • You recognize that no culture is “better” than another culture. • We’re all different, and that’s okay!

  8. Having tolerance…. • Having tolerance means that you treat everyone the same, no matter their characteristics.

  10. 10/26 Character Counts List p. 34L(And Poster) • Groups of 4: Select your character trait from box • Brainstorm 3+ ways that you and your group mates demonstrate that character trait at school • This brainstorm list goes on page 34L (everyone) • Create a Character Counts Poster: • Trait and definition (re-word mine into an easy def.) • Your list of how you encourage that trait at school • Examples of encouragement! • Color, pictures, etc.

  16. Cultural Competence Scale 1. Cultural Competence Full understanding of your own culture and exploration of other cultures to understand the strengths of each. This requires people to step out of their comfort zone by dialoging with people different from yourself. 2. Tolerance & Acceptance Having the ability to not think one culture is better than another. 3. Ethnocentricism (Live & Let Live) Thoughts and actions that demonstrate the belief that one culture is better than another. Usually, people have an attitude of live and let live, which roughly translates into, “You stay away from me and I’ll stay away from you.” 4. Discriminate, Disdain & Hatred The practice of unfairly judging another by stereotyping all members of a certain group and discriminate against them. People in this category commonly use racial epitaphs and/or make fun of others. 5. Acting on Negative Emotions The process of openly hating and acting violently towards specific groups of people (KKK, race wars/ gang violence, Holocaust, genocide)

  17. Functions of Culture • Culture defines the accepted behaviors, roles, interpretations, and • expectations of a social group. Nothing escapes the power of • culture. How people dress, what they eat, what they do for fun, • how they spend their free time, what they believe in, and how • they act is defined by their culture. • 2. Culture gives people a sense of identity. Having gender identity, • age, religion, history, and certain material possessions provide • the tools through which self-identity is created.

  21. Example: Thesis: Tolerance is understanding that everyone is different and not judging people by their differences. Body Paragraph: Throughout my life, I have witnessed discrimination, intolerance, and have personally been shown discrimination. People may think that just because I’m white, I’m rich. This isn’t true; in fact, I’ve had a job since I was fifteen years old and worked in order to pay my way through college.Additionally, some people may discriminate against students from San Fernando and think that everyone is gang affiliated. This is untrue, however, and people shouldn’t judge someone based on the neighborhood that they come from. Everyone should be treated equally and with tolerance. Tolerance Attitude Preparation Perseverance Respect Honesty Integrity Courage Appreciation Self-Control Empathy Gratitude Tolerance Duty Loyalty Responsibility Compassion Leadership Character ARTHUR ASHE • Arthur Ashe was a professional tennis player in the 1960s and 1970s. • He grew up in Richmond, Virginia and due to segregation, was not permitted to play tennis with white children. • Arthur Ashe became the first black male to win the U.S. Open. • Arthur Ashe became infected with the AIDS virus during a blood transfusion in 1983. • He gave this new disease a face and helped educate the public before his death in 1993
