  2. Activities Capturing a Waypoint/ Tree locations Collecting attribute data on GPS Data Collection Sheet Data prep Making a map

Activity - Tree inventory • GPS 10 tree locations • On data sheet write down: • Tree height (ft) – guessimate using a partner e.g. Partner stands next to tree, tree is 2 times person’s height, person is 5’5”, so tree is 11” • Type: evergreen or deciduous • Species (if known) • Mulching depth (in) • Distance to pavement (ft) • Notes

  4. Prepping Data • Input hand written data into GPS_data_entry_form.xlsx • Save file as CSV (comma delimited) • Download GPS data (See DNR Garmin manual) • make sure to set ArcMap projection to WGS 1984 • Save as ArcView Shapefile (Unprojected)

  5. Making a Map Add GPS shapefile & .csv to a new map document Add imagery from …\Day3\data\GPS\ Export CSV as a .dbf (so it can be joined to shapefile) Join .dbf with shapefile Symbolize on attribute data
