  2. The Problem • Students with IEP’s are scoring poorly on HSA tests in all fields especially English • Poor decoding skills • Low word recognition skills • Low comprehension skills • Poor sight memory skills • Poor visual processing skills

  5. Differentiation • Students learn in many different ways • Gardner states that there are nine different types of intelligences • I will focus on three: audio, visual, and kinesthetic

  6. Learners Our targeted learners need to: • See things • Hear things • Feel or handle things This is how they process. The ClassMate incorporates all three of these learning styles

  8. The ClassMate Main Features • Synchronized text and audio • Study tools to assist in the learning process • Highlighting: helps focus on important passages • Bookmarks: helps find specific pages or sections quickly

  9. The ClassMate • Text or Voice Notes: allows you to take notes within the text • Ability to extract voice notes and text notes onto a PC • Speaking Dictionary • Create personalized tests in text format • Built-in text-to-speech engine (TTS) • Easily copy text files or NIMAS text book

The ClassMate • Touchscreen increases interaction with text • Plays many different file formats • Voice recording capability via built-in microphone • Playback through stereo headphones or built-in speaker • Connectable to external thumb drives-USB drives • USB 2.0 port to connect to PC as Windows USB drive

Media Specialist as a Leader As the Media Specialist I will: • Promote The ClassMate tothe SIT team and throughout the school • Promote reading as a critical tool for all students and teachers • Offer training before school starts with a representative from HumanWare • Have ongoing training as needed • Collaborate with teachers in their classrooms

  16. The Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) Adult learners are different. • Awareness. Little or no concern about innovation • Informational. General interest—would like to know more • Personal. Want to know how it will affect them

  17. The Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) con’t. • Management. Learn process and tasks of innovation—focus on information/resources • Consequence. Impact on students • Collaboration. Cooperate in implementing the innovation • Refocusing. Considers benefits and thinks of additional alternatives

The Assessment Summative • Give the students the Woodcock Johnson test as a baseline • Track test and reading scores throughout the year • SRI scores • Retest the students at the end of the year Formative • Student observations • Peer interaction with The ClassMate • Monitor daily assignments for understanding • Keep track of what students are reading

  20. In Conclusion I think that The ClassMate will: • Help our special ed students become life long learners and enjoy reading • Raise HSA scores in English • Raise the self-esteem of our students • Give our students better opportunities after high school
