  1. SEVENTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMMEFP7-SME-2008-2: Research for the benefit of specific groups (in particular SMEs) Activities of task 2.3 (WP2) Anna Gaki, PhD Chemical engineer NTUA NU-Roof Technical Meeting Delft, 25 January 2011

  2. WP2 • Task 2.3 (NTUA) : Waterproof and reflective coatings • water based hydrophobic primer coating formulation with high penetration capabilities (NTUA - NanoPhos) • new generation functional coatings to be used as top layer for building roofs with high reflectivity and tailored thermal emittance, with self healing and hydrophobic properties, good adhesion, flexibility, hardness, and chemical resistance (NTUA - NanoPhos)

  3. Nanophos products - Commercial • SurfaPore C • Water repellent for cement surfaces, grout, stucco and natural or artificial stones • Prevents humidity surface corrosion and crackings, extending the lifetime of surfaces. • Prevents growth of algae, mould and microorganisms. • Prevents white spots and salt deposits (efflorescence). • Can be applied easily on surfaces, but also can be mixed with cement-based powders, instead of water. • Assures surface “breathing” without change • on colours, appearance, texture or essence. • SurfaPore C will be used as “primer” for details, corners, abudments etc.

  4. Nanophos products - Commercial • SurfaPore Thermodry • Nanotechnology and Microtechnology additive for making any acrylic water based paint thermal insulating and water repelling • Helps in conserving energy by increasing the energy efficiency of buildings • Makes paint insulating & water repelling • Protects against mould growth • Extends paint lifetime • Increases paint volume by 60% • SurfaPore Thermodry will be used as top-coat paint additive

  5. Nanophos products - Under development • Acrylic modified paint • Acrylic-modified polyurethane water-based 1-component (1K) paint • Flexibility • Strength • High temperature resistance • Can be combined with Thermodry additive to form a ready-to-use reflecting and thermo-insulating paint • Initially the paint was developed for metallic surfaces. However it will probably be compatible with textiles (will be tested) • The product’s mass production will start in the next few months • Water repellent for textiles • This product is still under development, and the final formula is not yet completed

  6. Commercial Products

  7. Commercial Products See details in the complete list

  8. Commercial Products • Paints • Common acrylic water-based paints are considered water-proof when dry. However they do not provide 100% sealing • Breathable • Higher reflectance • Compatible with reflective additives • Lower cost • Acrylic-silicone or polyurethane modified paints might provide better water-proofing • Elastomeric waterproofing membranes • Liquid Applied Resin membranes are an alternative roof sealing and water-proofing solution • No need for bitumen-based membrane underneath, but can be applied on top • Not breathable • Incompatible with water-based additives • Lower reflectance • Significantly higher cost

  9. Paint experts (to be discussed) • Nanophos • Nanophos will launch the new enhanced acrylic-modified paint product in the following months • Nanophos is currently working on a new nanotechnology product for water-proofing textiles • Nearchimica • Nearchimica does not produce paints but various formulations for the painting indusrty etc. • They could try to waterproof the textile • Other suggestions?

  10. Future work • Testing of Nanophos’ new paint as well as selected commercial acrylic paints with Nanophos’ reflective additive (SurfaPore Thermodry) • NRVII impregnated textile + new textile samples from STFI • Nanophos waterproofing solution on impregnated textiles or on top of the paint • Lab scale tests (IR lamps, conductivity, reflectance)

  11. Textiles – Top coating Results
