  3. Jefferson’s Foreign Policy • Really wanted no alliances 1. Not possible due to: a. trade w/ nations b. desire to expand west c. other countries pulling us in

  4. Jefferson’s Foreign Policy 2. Problems with France and Britain A. Britain did not want us trading w/ France 1. They set up a blockade and they would impress our sailors

  5. Jefferson’s Foreign Policy B. France did not want us trading with Britain. 1. France set up a blockade

  6. Jefferson’s Foreign Policy C. America is really STUCK!

  7. Jefferson’s Foreign Policy D. June 1804 Chesapeake vs. Leopard 1. 3 Americans died 2. Americans are MAD!

  8. Trade as a Weapon • Jefferson Passes Embargo Act 1807 1. No Americans could go to foreign ports 2. No British ships could dock in American ports 3. Ends up hurting America

  9. Trade as a Weapon B. Madison wins election of 1808 1. He signed a law that Americans can trade w/ any country EXCEPT France & Britain a. Not very effective either

  10. 4. Tecumseh & Native Americans • British were stirring up Native American resistance B. Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief called for tribes to unite

  11. 4. Tecumseh & Native Americans C. Treaty of Fort Wayne gave USA 3 million acres of Native American land 1. Tecumseah said “NO WAY” 2. Tecuseah tried to unite the tribes 3. Shawnee were defeated at The Battle of Tippicanoe 4. Big loss for Tecumseah

  13. 5. War Hawks C. Hawks want 1. Britain out of Canada 2. Britain to stop helping Natives 3. Britain to stop impressing our soldiers 4. Britain to stop seizing our ships

  14. 5. War Hawks D. Henry Clay is a war hawk E. America declares war against Britain on June 18, 1812
