  2. Who will get the vaccine? Target groups • Pregnant women • People who live with or care for children <6 months of age • Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel • Persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years of age • People 25-64 who are at higher risk due to chronic health conditions

  3. What if there isn’t enough? Priority groups • Pregnant women • People who live with or care for children <6 months of age • Health care and emergency medical services personnel with direct patient contact • Children from 6 months through 4 years • Persons 5 years through18 who have chronic medical conditions

  4. What about the seniors? • Lower risk of infection, hospitalization and death in the 65+ age group • Some degree of pre-existing immunity in those 60 and up • No outbreaks in nursing homes thus far

  5. What about workers in schools? • Health room staff qualify as direct patient care givers • Teachers qualify if in target/priority groups • In the end, there should be enough for everyone

  6. How do we get the H1N1 vaccine? • Pre-registration with DHMH online • Some private schools have already signed up to be vaccinators • Vaccine will be delivered either through McKesson or the state • Date of delivery as yet unknown • Order date – soon!

  7. Looking at the numbers • 600,000 in Montgomery county are in the target group • 2.8 million in Maryland are in this group • This is a good time to determine numbers in your school for priority/target groups

  8. How much will we get? • This is the great unknown • Orders will be for the one month to begin • The news is saying we could have it by October 5- the reality? unknown

  9. H1N1 Vaccine • NOT experimental • Both inactivated and LAIV will be available • Will likely come in small amounts to start • CAN be administered with seasonal flu vaccine in some cases • If both are inactivated • If one is inactivated NOT if both are LAIV
