  2. The goal • OCLC will offer simple and comprehensive fulfillment options in a way which meets the patron’s requirements and the library’s cost/time goals

  3. The environment • Libraries are re-examining how they fill the user’s information needs • Increased Consortial Borrowing groups • Using buy vs. borrow as cheaper alternative • E-content continues to proliferate and consume library budgets • Not adequately exposed • Goes un-used • Libraries seeking faster delivery mechanisms to satisfy user expectations

  4. The objectives • Create centralized consortial borrowing system • Improve access to licensed digital content • Offer seamless buy vs. borrow services • Create framework for improved international cooperation

The projects • Create centralized consortial borrowing system • Use NCIP to interact with local ILS • Include the ability for small libraries with no ILS to participate in consortia • Improve unmediated requesting for both loan and copy via automated use of Policies Directory and Holdings data

  6. The projects • Access to Licensed Content • Encourage libraries to load e-journal holdings • Create a registry of OpenURL resolvers • Study including citation metadata in WorldCat • Improve automated use of holdings data for unmediated requesting

  7. The projects • Seamless Buy vs. Borrow • Negotiate with book and document suppliers • Build service to search multiple suppliers simultaneously • Integrate into WorldCat Resource Sharing & ILLiad workflows

  8. The projects • International Cooperation • Continue to batch load international holdings via large union catalogs • Open up the Policies Directory • Extend the IFM framework

  9. First steps • Complete migration to MARC Format for Holdings Data • Use new data to automate request process • Willingness to loan/copy • Issue level detection • Get Policy Directory up to date • Begin extension of IFM

  10. Recent and upcoming enhancements to WorldCat Resource Sharing • Request Manager searching by label • Exportable file to create mailing labels, bookstraps, etc.

  11. WorldCat Resource Sharing/ILLiad • Routing ILL requests based on lending policies in MFHD-converted holdings data • Year data • Vol/issue data • Using LDRs converted to MFHD “in the background” • Monographs: default set to will lend/will copy • Serials: default set to will not lend/will copy

  12. ILL Policies Directory • Changes to data fields to make better use of policies data for automatic routing • Fall 2005 project to “beef up” policy data for top lenders

  13. Online Payment Services/IFM • Investigating book purchases using the online payment service • IFM Manager • Ability for institutions to pay for digital content, lost books, overdue fees, and other identified costs via IFM across currencies
