Network Operating System • A network operating system (NOS) is software with special functions for: • Managing the connections to other computers • Managing shared file and printer access • Managing users and their access to networks • Examples are • Windows Server 2008 • Novell Open Enterprise Server

  3. Network Client Software • Each client has to have: • A set of software • to manage the adapter hardware • to manage the protocols eg TCP/IP • to control the user access to the network (login) • to manage local sharing of data

  4. Network Applications • Internet browser • Displays pages created in web formats (CSS/HTML) • Several available with different features • Task: How many browsers are there? • Firewall • To protect the network from unwanted traffic • E-mail client • For creating, sending, receiving and displaying e-mail

  5. Utilities • Standard utilities required • Disk checkers and defragmenters • Backup utilities (very important for file servers) • Disk compression and data compression utilities • Archive utilities • Anti-virus utilities • Task • Research one of these utilities and present findings to group
