  1. Computer Network Software By: Blake, Andrew Z, Andrew P.

  2. Definition of Network Operating System • The sole purpose of the N.O.S is to coordinate the activities of multiple computers across a network.

  3. Types of Network Operating Systems • The two major types of network operating systems are: • Peer-to-Peer • Client/Server • Most modern networks consist of both types.

  4. Peer-to-Peer • Share resources and files. • Doesn’t have a file server or dedicated management. • Designed primarily for small-medium LAN networks.

  5. Peer-to-Peer (Pros & Cons) • Pros • No need for Dedicated server (Less initial Cost) • Setup - Very easy (Desktop O/S) • Cons • Decentralized • Not very secure

  6. Client/Server • Functions and applications are centralized in one or more dedicated file servers. • File server becomes the heart of the system, providing security and access to resources. • The network can allow multiple users to simultaneously share the same resources.

  7. Client/Server (Pros & Cons) • Pros • Accessibility - Can be accessed remotely on any platform • Flexibility - Easy to add new technology • Centralized - All in one place (Dedicated Server) • Cons • Expensive - Not Cheap for a Dedicated Server • Maintenance - Requires lots of this from time to time. • Dependence - Operations stop when the server goes down.

  8. Popular Network Operating Systems. • Macintosh OS X • Microsoft Windows Server • UNIX/Linux • Each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
