  2. Separation of Powers The distribution of power and authority among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the government.

  3. TheExecutive Branch The Executive Branch is made up of the President, Vice-President and cabinet members. The job of the Executive Branch is to enforce and carry out the laws

  4. TheLegislativeBranch The Legislative Branch is made up of the two houses of Congress: the House of Representatives and the Senate. The role of the Legislative Branch is to make the laws that govern our nation.

  5. The Judicial Branch The Judicial Branch is made up the Supreme Court and all lower Federal Courts (Appeals, District, etc.). The job of the Judicial Branch is to interpret the laws set forth by the Legislative Branch.

  6. Checksand Balances This is the principle by which one branch of government checks and balances the power of the other branch. The framers of the Constitution deliberately shared powers among the three branches because they did not want any one branch to have too much power so as to dominate the other two.

  7. Examples of Checks and Balances -Congress may pass laws........but the President can veto them. -The President can veto laws.......but Congress can override the veto with a 2/3 vote. -The President and Congress may agree on a law..........but the Supreme Court can declare a law unconstitutional. -The President can appoint Judges and other government officials.......but Senate must approve them. -Supreme Court judges have life terms.......but they can be impeached .
